On Wednesday, Newcastle suffered their first league defeat in five, at Fulham, but they have now gone three games without a win, taking two points from nine.
Andy Carroll has left and, at Fulham, Shola Ameobi suffered a fractured cheek bone, so Peter Lovenkrands should start alongside Leon Best. Newcastle newcomer Stephen Ireland will not figure. He joined on loan from Villa on Monday but has a hamstring problem.

Midfielder Cheik Tiote is available after suspension but Ryan Taylor (ankle), Steven Taylor (hamstring), Dan Gosling (knee), Alan Smith (ankle) and Hatem Ben Arfa (broken leg) remain on the sidelines.
