We blame our politicians, but the truth is that we may be worse off, giving same opportunity. I watched our space, religion body, artisans, students, lecturers we are all the same with little exception.
When you blame our leaders, check your life, am I straight forward too.
God bless Nigeria................................

Interesting that you should bring this up at this time, because it coincides with what some of us have been discussing in the investment part of this forum. Here is one experience by ultron12345, just to tell you the scale of how bad situations are now and how it is impacting on investments.

I can relate very well with your second paragraph.

I run a manufacturing business and a trading business.
The biggest challenge in my manufacturing business is not power, or infrastructure, the biggest challenge is getting honest staff. Everyone we hire is appears to be on a mission to steal as much as possible. Inflated invoices, recording less than the actual number of units produced. The worst part of it all is that all the fraud we've uncovered is not done by a single person, it's usually many staff who collude with each other, from production, to sales, to finance, even top management. There was a year I overhauled management 3 times in a year. But I've found a solution sha, I now use Indian management. So competent, so honest and so straightforward. I thought they were expensive at first with all the visa fees, accommodation, house staff, but now that losses due to staff theft have been reduced to a minimum, and efficiency increased, the Indian management has turned out to be cheaper than the previous Nigerian management. Now, all sensitive positions involving money go to Indians. Nigerians are only allowed in non-sensitive positions. I used to criticize companies like Dangote Group that hire so many Indians when there are many unemployed Nigerians, but now, I understand their decision.

My biggest challenge in the trading business is the same, getting honest staff. The form of trading occurs in the open market, and involves staff having access to huge sums of money running into a few millions. I know how much I pay to security companies to provide escorts for the staff, not to prevent robbery, but to ensure that the staff go straight to the bank to deposit the money after the day's sales and not disappear with my money. This money spent on security companies is even enough to be declared as profit. We have to spend on CCTV, biometric scanners and other things that wouldn't not be needed if staff weren't looking for the slightest opportunity to steal.

It got so bad at a point that my main criteria for employing staff was no longer conpaetency but honesty. At least, competency and skills can be learnt, but once you're dishonest, you're dishonest.

We always complain of the economy and how they are no jobs. I know people abroad who would have loved to set up job creating businesses in Nigeria but they can't because they can't get any trustworthy person to run it.

I know people in Nigeria with so much money, they want to start factories and other job-creating businesses but they can't because they are occupied elsewhere and can't get any trustworthy person to run the business. So instead of investing in the real sector and creating jobs, they'll just buy treasury bills, while the thieves are shouting no jobs.

Many big businesses would have been born in Nigeria if we could engage in partnerships, but we cant because you can't trust anyone. This is one advantage the Indians and Lebanese have over us in Nigeria. They can pull resources together and do mega-business, unlike Nigerians that because only one person must do everything since we can't partner, end up with small, tiny businesses.

Start a poultry and they will be stealing your eggs. Some will even go
ahead to be killing the chickens so that they'll be allowed to take them home.

Start an entertainment/viewing/game center and they'll be pocketing
your money. On the days you're around at the business, the money
realized will be x10 of the money realized when you're not around.
Because they're eating your money.

Lease out a vehicle to a driver to use and watch as he'll finish you.

Start a restaurant, the same thing will happen. More than half of the
total food ingredients will end up in their personal kitchens.

Even ordinary provisions shop, they will find a way to steal.

You'll see them with that their evil, wicked saying "na where person dey work, na there e dey chop, na e make dem dey callam workchop/workshop"...... Just imagine, justifying theft at work.

And you'll see these people point their crooked fingers at politicians when they're not any different. I usually say the reason most Nigerians haven't stolen billions of government money, is simply lack of opportunity.

Nigerians are the problem of Nigeria.

Very apt. Give someone building project to supervise, he will be building his own with your materials and he will be undercutting payment to staff workers. We are just a dishonest nation. If you go to companies, they barely survive despite huge revenue. Same with government setups, some director earn salaries of 50 with inflated vouchers.

Whenever I remember how I was duped in Alaba market by 12 men without blinking an eye with their language despite my plea for clean deal, non of them can actually tell the other it wasn't right, it teaches my a non palatable lesson, you might you are simple and do no one no wrong, some others are like devouring devils with their devilish intention, it seems the whole Africa is infected with sentiment and greed.

One major reason why Africa and Nigeria may remain underdeveloped, some people prefer to put their money in bank rather than any business.
Everybody wants to live fast life. It is only in Nigeria you buy something and the sale person will be thinking you leave the change for him or her. Abroad your exact change will be handed over to you.

Religious and ethnic fanaticism is the cause.

This hampered the unmitigated dispensing of justice even at the topmost.

Take away religious and ethnic biases and people will be free to think more objectively and independently to understand that loyalty to country is his Civic responsibility to perform.

A friend owned a poultry in PortHarcourt, he had to shut it down when liabilities became unbearable.
I know someone that owns a fashion home; one of the boys was stealing to play bet. One day he stole forty thousand naira meant for buying material and he never showed up in the shop till today.

Your last paragraph, consider that our police was functioning optimally, fishing out the absconding boy would serve as a deterrent to others. Brings us back to leadership failure.

The heart of man is desperately evil and it cuts across race and Creed. But if I know that I would surely face consequences of my actions if cut, it will deter me.

A cousin brought her daughter for an exam in my part of Lagos. As she sat down, I noticed straight away she looked stressed.

I asked how's business (a large poultry in another part of Lagos). Come & hear story. Her employees have finished her with stealing. They'll kill the chickens, throw it over the fence where accomplices would collect to sell to restaurants. Even the security man was involved. So bad.

See this thing called greed and cheating is inbuilt in us....lets be true to ourself, it's only self discipline and probably spirituality that helps one to overcome it. We are always looking for ways to profit off something whether legal or not. Let me use myself as example. I did a job for someone and got paid, a white guy precisely. Another Nigerian guy did the same type of job for the same white man but could not receive his money due to restriction related to Nigeria. He made the mistake of not negotiating his payment method first before delivery the job. So this white guy contacted me to pay me the guy's money and give it to him. Gbam that Nigerian spirit entered me. I started thinking of how to make profit from that. I had to come back to my senses because of my discipline and fear of God o. Now not everyone has this discipline and that is our issue. You will see someone packing billions that he can't use. The average Nigerian is greedy because of indiscipline. We don't just know when to stop.

Camera has its limitations.

If you're only getting a few hours power per day, camera installation won't help much. Even battery powered camera won't help.

They'll just use a stick to turn the camera away for a few minutes while the deed is done. And what happens when they cut the wires and everyone claims they no nothing about it.

Remember also that installing enough cameras in a large poultry is costly.

If workers want to frustrate you ehn, you'll regret the day you made the mistake of starting that business.

True. Because of lack of funds and most times lack of proper business plan, many businesses will continue to suffer these things. Technological solutions to manpower deficiency is usually lacking in the plan of most businesses. People are corrupt all over the world, but with a strong system, they are deterred. Have you not seen how some shop owners alert their customers about the presence of cameras, they are not interested in catching you, but to deter you.
