Considering the " bumper-to-bumper " traffic upwards on a hill, which would be the best way out to drive, keeping in mind the load on the engine?

Driving uphill wt the AC will always make the engine work a little harder and consumes more gasoline. If you can avoid using the AC (especially uphill) pls do. If not, guess u dont have a choice. i dont want u cooked when u get out of the car.

Guess the only thing you need to do is to use the appropriate gear - if it is bumper to bumper stick to the highest gear (one). Don't keep your clutch pedal depresed when the traffic is at standstill; this would reduce the pressure on the hydraulic system. If your car is automatic transmission good for you, stick to your "DRIVE".

Finally, you have no issues if your car A/C is factory fitted; if it is the "home installed" it would be wise not to use it at all in bad traffic.

If the heat is not that bad you can turn A/C off; otherwise it doen't make much difference in fuel consumption < 5% Auto engines are designed to run A/C in any condition. Unless your A/C has problems.
On 4 cyls you'll feel a drop in power, but on a V6 it's minimal. You should rather be using your brakes to hold your position, not your clutch or balance with throttle. Shift to 2/1 on auto so that your transmission does not downshift everytime you slowdown.
