Jonathan meet opposition at the venue of the campaign

Nasarawa protesters hurl stones at Jonathan’s convoy
By Umar Muhammed and Festus Owete

Young men and women lined major roads leading to the Emir of Lafia’s palace in Nasarawa state yesterday chanting “Sai Buhari” and carrying Congress of Progressive Change presidential candidate Muhammadu Buhari posters. The youth also threw stones at the convoy of President Goodluck Jonathan as it passed by on its way to the state capital for the official flag-off of the presidential campaign, smashing a few windscreens in the process. The campaign entourage included the vice-president, Namadi Sambo, along with six governors from the North Central zone and other party candidates. Mr. Jonathan was accompanied along Doma Road to the palace by the governor of Nasarawa State, Aliyu Akwe Doma, to pay a visit to the traditional ruler, Isa Mustapha Agwai II.

The People’s Democratic Party spent several hours repairing damage caused by the anti-Jonathan/Sambo protesters to billboards of the president and his vice. The billboards had been defaced with paint, including another of Governor Doma, erected at strategic locations around the Lafia metropolis. When Mr. Jonathan’s convoy arrived in the town and made its way to the emir’s palace at about 2:30pm, the protesters blocked all major roads to the palace, hurling stones at the convoy. They screamed: “Nigeria, Sai Buhari, Nasarawa, Sai Al-Makura”, continually, overwhelming the efforts of security operatives including armed police officers stationed at strategic locations around the area.

State police commissioner, Wilfred Obute, refused to speak when our reporter called him for official comment. He said that he could not speak because he was in a meeting. Next observed that the police doubled the number of armed police officers and other security operatives along the way to Lafia Township Stadium, venue of the campaign flag-off. Supporters of party candidates were denied access to the venue of the campaign rally, a development which compelled the party to address a sparse crowd during the rally.

Jonathan should forget Niger, Nassarawa, part of Plateau in this election, then the whole North west, north east.!

Let's see how he wins south west. south and south east can go to him, but it is less that 20% of the voting population. pdp is in trouble and if they rig, the die!

The northerners are gradually turning coming from the north an electoral liability. Honestly speaking, I think that Buhari would make a better President than Jonathan but making his candidacy a regional issue would only lead to his failure. That is the mistake Atiku made. Instead of coming out with reasons why he is a better candidate, he and his advisers chose to play the ethnic/regional card. His only campaign issue was zoning and that did not go down well with the now better-informed Nigerian electorate. This ultimately led to his disgraceful defeat at the PDP primaries.

Gen. Buhari is seen as an incorruptible leader and that is the most important thing Nigeria needs at this moment. Personally, I have decided to vote for him even though I come from the President's region. What Nigerians should look out for is the qualities of the candidate and not where he comes from or other trivial issues like religion, etc. But Buhari's advisers should not make the mistake of portraying him as a regional candidate. That will alienate voters from the other regions and lead to his defeat. This kind of post will not do the image or fortunes of Buhari any good. OP, Please think about it.

my initial post was deleted because it carried a contary and true position of things:

Na wa o:

http://www.vanguardngr.com/2011/02/jonathan-vows-to-pursue-all-law-breakers/

Goodluck Jonathan, yesterday, kicked off his presidential campaign on both a note of good tidings and one of warning: He declared that better days are ahead for Nigerians just as he warned enemies of progress and violators of the law that his administration would pursue law breakers to the ends of the Earth.

President Jonathan also opened a bag of gifts for the people of the North Central geo_political zone, promising to provide them with universities, proper care for communities along the water ways, and construction of a refinery in the zone.
It was a day reminiscent of Jonathan’s presidential declaration at the Eagle Square.
The day also witnessed the handing over of the party’s flag to Senate President David Mark and the seven gubernatorial candidates of the party in the geo_political zone by the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP’s Acting National Chairman, Haliru Bello.

The seven gubernatorial candidates were in attendance and they were made up of incumbents from Benue, Nasarawa, Plateau, Niger and two new candidates from Kogi and Kwara States.

Just before President Jonathan delivered his address, one Shittu Mohammed of the Nigeria Republican Party, NRP, announced that his party and 25 others (making 26), have stepped down from contesting the presidential election and were, by that spirit, endorsing as well as being ready to work for President Jonathan’s victory. The crowd cheered.

The mammoth crowd at the venue in Lafia started arriving as early as 8.00 a.m. as the state governors in the zone had mobilized effectively for the launching. At 4:15pm,

President Jonathan was called to present his address. But he first danced round the area just in front of the podium, acknowledging cheers from the crowd, waving and smiling.

At 4:20 pm, Bello handed over the PDP flag to President Jonathan, saying: “Mr. President, take this flag round Nigeria.”

Jonathan’s address

After acknowledging those in attendance and his wife, President Jonathan said the coming to Lafia was for two purposes.
Jonathan said: “Until you get the flag, you are not yet sure. Today, we have gotten the flag and the flag has been presented to the six PDP governorship candidates in the states. I will not bore you, but it would only be proper for me to greet all Nigerians after receiving the flag.

“There are two key things central to every government in the world. One is the economy of the country. And for any country to move from third world to first world, the economy is very important. Unfortunately, an economy is like a farmer who goes to farm and it is not the day you go to the farm that it yields. It takes a while and we believe that all that we are doing for our people would yield.
“At the same time, the destruction of the economy does not start the same day. Unfortunately, those who worked to destroy the economy are coming out to talk about it.

They can not. For you to create wealth you must improve your economy. The twin sister to the economy is security. If there is no security, the economy would not grow well.

Security comes first before you can even manage the economy. The two are central. But how do we improve the economy.

“First and foremost, before you talk about the economy, the people must be enlightened via education and we want to improve on it through the almajiri system, through the primary and secondary and university education system. And we are insisting that every state must get one federal university.

“Some of the states are yet to get. We are going to complete it by the second year of this administration. The North Central zone is central and so we are giving two to the North Central, one in Lafia and the other in Kogi. The next thing is power, and for you to change the macro economy, you need power and the power system is improving.

“The next is agriculture and for farmers to get better yield, irrigation is key and that is why we are keen on providing water both for drinking and irrigation. Another is our commitment to the rail system for which we have commenced work. Nasarawa has good deposits of tin and other parts of the North Central are blessed with enormous resources, we would develop them.

“We are also looking at coal development in the area of mining. We are fast_tracking investment in coal. From our next administration, we would look at communities that serve as our catchment area for power supply, that is areas along the waterways. We will think about these communities.

“Of course you are aware of the refinery we are planning for Kogi. We know we have our security challenges now and the trend in the world would go. For anybody involved in terrorism or bombings, we would pursue you and catch you. This administration will not sweep any crime under the carpet, no matter how big or small. There will be no sacred cows.

“We will not stop investigation until we get you. We are also looking for more superior methods of detecting crime. I am promising you that we would soon put all these behind us”.

VP Namadi Sambo

Earlier, Vice President Namadi Sambo had started by calling Jonathan ‘Mainasara.’

He acknowledged the President’s wife and then his own. He observed all protocols and greeted the Chief Host, the Nasarawa State governor and the other governors present and the party leadership. He then greeted the members of the party in the North Central Zone.
He thanked the crowd for the mammoth reception and said these were good signs for transformation.
He said: “Today, we’re here to start the next great journey and seeking your support to achieve that.

“Come April, 2011, we shall vote for our dear President, Goodluck Mainasara Ebele Jonathan. I will mention but a few of the things we have done within the very short period our President has been in office for the North Central.

“Education has been put forward by our President to address poverty and he has ensured that every state has a university. Today, Nasarawa has a new university, Kogi has one. There will be refineries and power plants in Kogi and Benue; we are building railway lines and new educational facilities. Why are all these happening, this is because when you look at all the other presidential candidates, Jonathan stands tall because he was a former deputy governor, vice president, acting president and he is going to be our next president.

“In addition, he has a Ph.D, he is a scientist and he has me, an architect as deputy who has been designing with him good things for Nigeria. My people in this zone, I can see from your faces that you have decided to vote for us.”

Flag presentation

The Acting National Chairman, Haliru Bello, who acknowledged the roles of the First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan, thanked all for the support given to the party “because the party has a 100 per cent representation in the governorship sphere as well as a preponderance of local government chairmen in the zone.
After handing the governorship candidates their flags, Bello then presented Jonathan with his own flag.

On the podium was Sarah Jubril, the failed PDP presidential aspirant. Shittu Mohamed, of Nigeria Republican Party announced that 26 political parties under a grand alliance have endorsed President Jonathan.

Among the 26 parties in the grand alliance are:
Nigeria Republican Party
Nigerian Peoples Congress
Democratic Peoples Alliance
Advance Congress of Democrats
Peoples Progressive Party
Action Alliance
Mass Movement of Nigeria
Change Advocacy Party of Nigeria

After President Jonathan’s speech, Kwara State Governor, Bukola Saraki and Sarah Jubril, took turns to shake hands with President Jonathan.

This, according to Bello, “was symbolic of the fact that PDP leaders have since the primaries buried the hatchet.”

Never was it scanty at all. With time they'll turn in for him, I guess there will be much surprises at 2011 polls as people begin to understand the need to vote proven personalities and not religion, party, or ethnicity.

STAMPEDE AS YOUTHS DISRUPT BUHARI’S RALLY IN YENAGOA
Written by furtune Politics Dec 8, 2010

Stampede as youths disrupt Buhari’s rally in Yenagoa
•Sylva flays attack
From FEMI FOLARANMI, Yenagoa
Wednesday, December 08, 2010

General Mohammed Buhari.

There was pandemonium on Tuesday in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State capital when the youth wing of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) foiled an attempt to disrupt the rally organized for the Presidential candidate of the party, General Mohammed Buhari.

Buhari, who arrived Yenagoa in company of the governorship aspirant in the state, Mr. Famous Daunimugha and national officers of the party was driven straight to the Amarata School field amidst shouts of “Sai Buhari” by the youths wearing tee-shirts with his photograph and that of Daunimugha embossed on them.

The Chairman of the party in Bayelsa State, Mr. Williams Woyinkuro  Berezi was in the middle of his speech when bottles were thrown into the arena, causing confusion, as people took to their heels.
Berezi, who was unsure if the bottles would get to the podium, stopped his speech but was urged to continue by majority of the youths who had formed a ring around the dignitaries.

Some women and youths who scampered for dear lives when the bottles were being thrown, sustained various degrees of injuries due to stampede.
However, mobile policemen and some of the youths went to the Melford Okilo Road to confront those who were throwing the bottles and were able to get one of them, who was beaten before he was rescued by the police.

Buhari, who later addressed the people, enjoined them to protect their democratic rights during the 2011 elections.
According to him, Bayelsans must ensure they register; vote during the elections and ensure that their votes count by protecting it.
He listed security of lives and property and tackling indiscipline and corruption headlong as part of the programme the CPC would pursue if elected into government.
On the incident of the bottles thrown into the arena, Buhari said it was the responsibility of law enforcement agencies to protect people during political rallies.
Noting that CPC was not afraid of any party, he said security agencies were duty bound to protect lives of people.

Daunimugha reacting to the incident said as Bayelsans, they would not allow themselves to be scared, as they would ensure that they vote on election day.
“As Bayelsans, we would not be scared. We must vote. We would not allow anybody to intimidate us,” he said.
Meanwhile, Bayelsa State government has condemned in strong words, the use of bottles to disrupt the rally organized for Presidential candidate of Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) in Bayelsa, General Mohammed Buhari.

The Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Doifie Ola, in a terse press statement entitled “ Buhari In Yenagoa” said the government condemned the act, adding, however, that it was at a loss why the organizers of the rally did not deem it fit to inform the government about the rally.
He said as a former Head of State, protocol demands that the state government should know when Buhari came into Bayelsa irrespective of party affiliations.

“While we condemn this act with every force at our command, we are at a loss as to why neither Buhari nor his managers thought it fit to inform the state government of his campaign visit to Bayelsa. As a former Head of State, protocol demands that the State Government be in the know. “Governor Timipre Sylva was only informed about General Buhari’s visit only after the unfortunate incident at the rally ground. We consider this improper. Irrespective of differences in political party affiliations, the general and his party have to acknowledge the fact that there is a sitting governor in the state,”he said.

Re: Nasarawa Protesters Hurl Stones At Jonathan’s Convoy by Kabikala(m): 2:33pm On Feb 08, 2011
I had already foreseen this counter-attack happening with the way Buhari's campaign train was attacked in Bayelsa last December and this is very unhealthy for our democracy. It was bad for Jonathan not to have issued any statement condemning the attack on Buhari a few weeks back and Buhari will also lose my respect if he does not come out to condemn this act of thuggery in Nassarawa. The Bayelsa State Government made a silly statement to the effect that Buhari did not inform it of his coming, and by my own submission, it means they are not obliged to provide him with any security. These kinds of action will further balkanise this country .
And to those who think such acts are a measure of popularity, have you never heard of rent-a-crowd in Nigeria? I mean you can hire a crowd to do anything you want if you are willing to pay. It has nothing to do with popularity.
Babangida, Abacha and Turai have all hired crowds to plead their causes at one time or the other.

It seems as if one has to sharpen his martial art skills if he wants to attend political rallies in Nigeria.
