Scientists have revealed for the first time the true scale of the impact the fires which started last year had on the country’s native wildlife.

An estimated 143 million mammals, 180 million birds, 51 million frogs and a staggering 2.5 billion reptiles are thought to have been affected by the crisis, according to an interim report seen by The Guardian.

Not all the animals would have been killed by the flames or heat, but scientists say the prospects of survival for those that withstood the initial impact was ‘probably not that great’ due to the starvation, dehydration and predation by feral animals that followed.

Scientists had previously estimated that around one billion animals were killed in the fires. The new figure, based on research undertaken by 10 scientists from five institutions, is almost half the size of the planet’s human population.

Dermot O’Gorman, Chief executive of Australia’s World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) which commissioned the study, said he can think of no other event in living memory that has killed or displaced so many animals.

‘This ranks as one of the worst wildlife disasters in modern history,’ he said. A professor in ecology at the University of Sydney who oversaw the project, Chris Dickman, said its central finding was a shock even to the researchers.

‘Three thousand million native vertebrates is just huge. It’s a number so big that you can’t comprehend it,’ he said. ‘It’s almost half the human population of the planet’


Australia battled one of its worst bushfire seasons ever from September 2019 to March 2020. It started months earlier than usual, destroyed almost 3,000 homes and killed 34 people.

Scientists have long warned that a hotter, drier climate will contribute to fires becoming more frequent and more intense. Record breaking temperatures and months of severe drought fuelled the 2019-2020 crisis.

In December, every state had measured temperatures above 40C – including Tasmania, which is usually much cooler than the mainland. An analysis in March found the risk of the hot and dry conditions that helped drive the catastrophe had increased by four since 1900s.

Wow.....That's quite sad. We can't even begin to imagine the damage that the fires has caused to the natural habitat there; and even the prediction of many of such happening again is heart-wrenching.

We don't know what grace we enjoy here in Nigeria to not suffer these sorts of Natural Disasters! When nature is truly b!tching, you can hardly tame her.
