[s][/s]Two friends of mine ,one from South East and the other from North central started an argument recently at my place of work and i decided to throw it open to a wider intelligent audience as it grew into a wide wild argument about Lagos-kano and Lagos_calabar rail line.

Both were looking at the following factors:Economic,Financial,Tourism , Historical ,Administrative and social-cultural Benefits and Reasons accrued to the execution of these projects and the present factors at play of one (kano) already having an old gauge.
Now i decided this can help us put ourselves in the Nigerians politicians or Technocrat' s shoes as i believe it's high time we started providing solutions Instead of just complaining about how minister Ade and President Danladi or senator Obi is not doing right.
There is paucity of fund to execute both at a go,you can only execute one at a time ,which do you think should be executed first between Lagos-kano and Lagos-calabar Railway line.

Putting ourselves as project Engineer and also as project accountant of a bank offering loan for the project with no SENTIMENTS at the same time,looking at the facts and reality in the face and not forgetting that many of our leaders are always referring to Nairaland for insight and ideas too.

Some of the questions raised were:
which of the two Routes,Lagos-calabar(A) and Lagos-Kano(B)does the following most:

(1)conveys Agric. produce and Metallurgical material for export
(2) Conveys Tourist and Travellers
(3)Agric. produce for internal consumption
(4) conveys Locally produced goods(wears,processed material like oil and gas ,leather,petrochemical related and consumers goods)
(5)moves imported Equipment,Machines,Wears ,Chemicals,Foods and Beverages.
(6) Passengers
(7) Bring the best cash return to the Loaner
(cool Bring more service delivery and industrialization more enough to attract Funding of Execution
(9) which region do you feel has more industries out of the two regions linked (SS+SE )OR (NW + NC)and needs more access to the sea
(10) which has the biggest market for trade.

I know this is the Home of intelligent Nigerian,thanks As you read and give good and convincing reasons for your answers

Lagos-kano the trade volume between North and SouthWest can't be under estimated most industry in Southwest literally get raw materials from the North, while most finished products ends up in the North


Again Lagos-kano Rail would connect all Southwest state Lagos - Abeokuta - Ibadan phase one already completed, second phase would link Osun Ekiti Ondo Kogi Kwara Abuja- Kaduna (already completed) then Kano.


If not for militancy and piracy that drastically increased the cost of insurance on vessels plying SouthSouth Ports , East should have absolutely no business with Lagos

Do you and friends know the geographical layout of the shithole called Nigeria? You should be talking about Kaduna -Kano line since there is Lagos-Kaduna line already. As for Calabar-Kano line, there is nothing along the line. You should talk about revival of Port Harcourt or even Ibaka through Aba, Umuahia, Enugu, Makurdi to Kaduna Line.

It's a no brainer, Lagos-kano definitely.
Rail is primarily for transporting cargo; passenger transportation is secondary.
What sense does it make to transport cargo via rail from one coastal city to another when seaports in the other coastal cities can easily solve that?
That's why the British built the Lagos-kano and PH-Maiduguri narrow gauge rail lines to link the seaports to the hinterlands, and not Lagos-Calabar which should come after linking the hinterlands first.

This can only be a topic in a failed country like Nigeria where seaports in Warri, PH and Calabar don't function due to various stupid reasons.

The narrow gauge built by the British was poorly maintained by Nigerian government and left in a state of disrepair, hence the standard gauge railway modernisation plan by the FG for the two South-North rail lines.
I read a detailed coverage of a Lagos-Kano rail trip many years ago by a Premium Times journalist, a horrible trip that took about a week to complete.
Clearly, cargo transporters prefer using the roads which is way faster than the narrow gauge route.

are you so sure the ibadan- offa to kaduna section is ready,are sure you should not pick up your Nigerian atlas and get some information,that is why this thread was created,to enlighten.
Why do you feel the eastern port revival is foot dragging??

Are you saying piracy which is not preventing export of crude through the SS and SE native ports is preventing same use of such ports for importation of Goods , please explain

are you saying piracy which is not prevent exporting crude from the SS and SE native ports is the reason why the ports aren't working

SouthSouth Ports are fully functional and concessioned.. check any shipping and logistics website on rates to Onne port , Oil vessels have Naval escorts till they enter international waters, again Pirates can't waste their time on crude vessels as most crude oil deals are between Oil trading firms or government to government trades

Personally GDP statistics of state to be involved in both Lagos-kano and Lagos-Calabar shows Lagos-kano more economically feasible, same way the NBS data of traffic of vehicles on Federal Highway shows Lagos - Ibadan, Kaduna - Abuja and Kano - Kaduna highways as some of the busiest in the country

So we may use this stats
