Between Holiness And Heaven – Part 1

Saints of God in all ages are called to an uncompromising life of holiness and purity, following their conversion from sin through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

This was the focal theme of Peter’s epistle to the believers of his time – and by extension to believers in every age – who might be going through manifold temptations. They are expected to remain steadfast and sanctified, though the enemy tempts and tries them in various ways. “That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ” (1 Peter 1:7).

The demand for a holy life is anchored on God’s grace, which is bestowed on every genuinely born-again child of God. This grace helps us to refuse, renounce and reject ungodliness and worldly lusts. We are enabled through it to live a transparently holy life. The prime motivation for living the holy life rests on the fact that, one, God is holy and requires that His children live without compromise with the world. Two, our salvation is great and must be sustained through watchfulness over our souls. Three, Christ will soon return to take His waiting and prepared people home. This is the enduring lesson from Peter’s epistle, which all believers must take to heart, as we progress on our pilgrimage to heaven.

God’s grace enables its recipients to live “righteously, soberly and godly in this present world.” This grace is unmerited, unearned and completely free for those who dare to ask the Lord for it. God is holy and He provides His children with the resources needed to exemplify His high moral standard. He never asks anyone to live a life He does not make provision for. The holy and righteous life begins at salvation and becomes clearly evident when a believer is truly sanctified. Sanctification occurs when the root of sin, also called inward depravity or Adamic nature, is uprooted through the divine circumcision of the heart (Deuteronomy 30:6; Romans 2:29; Colossians 2:11).

The call to holy living covers every area of our lives – “But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation.” In other words, the heaven-bound saint must be holy in character, conduct, dressing, work, business transactions, academic pursuits, etc. Our inward and outward desires and aspirations must be in conformity with the will and word of God. In fact, the Lord calls us to perfection.

Every believer can receive the sanctification experience through, one, intense desire to be holy; two, consecration of our lives entirely to the Lord; three, praying earnestly to receive by faith.

Between Holiness And Heaven – Part 2

Humility of heart and life is a product of the saved and sanctified life. No individual Christian who had a genuine encounter with the Lord ever remains the same. The erstwhile sinner, bedevilled by all manner of sin, including pride, receives the grace to be transformed into a person dressed in the humble nature and attire of Christ.

Pride, the opposite of humility, is odious to God. He dwells “with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones." His favour is never with the arrogant and proud at heart; for “God resisteth the proud and giveth grace to the humble." Peter’s admonition and counsel to all Christian pilgrims is that we should be clothed with humility. It is a contradiction in terms to talk of a proud ‘believer’, a haughty ‘Christian’, an arrogant ‘child of God’. People who profess to know the Lord, while still manifesting pride has a question mark on their salvation.

Heaven is the glorious habitation of the Most High God and the eternal dwelling place of the saved and sanctified people in Christ. It is the abode of God promised to those who overcome sin and Satan; a place where all blood-washed and victorious saints shall rest forever. In heaven, there is no sorrow, death, pain, hunger or any such thing (Revelation 21:3,4).

The glorious hope of every heaven-bound believer is to enter God’s heaven at the end of life. This is the abiding charge of Peter to fellow pilgrims contending with the challenges of life. “Wherefore, gird up the loins of your mind, be sober and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought you at the revelation of Jesus Christ."

To get to heaven, one, we must lay aside every weight of sin – Hebrews 12:1. Two, make our calling and election sure – 2 Peter 1:10. Three, work out our salvation with fear and trembling – Philippians 2:12. Four, follow peace with all men and holiness “without which no man shall see the Lord” – Hebrews 12:14. Five, hold the beginning of our confidence, steadfast to the end – Hebrews 3:14. Six, fight the good fight of faith – 1 Timothy 6:12. Seven, seek those things, which are above – Colossians 3:1,2.

Jesus is Lord – Part 1

As the year draws to an end, and the whole world observes a day it believes is the birthday of Jesus Christ, the main point must not be lost on all: that the basic reason for Christianity is to crown Jesus as Lord. Genuine Christianity, whether in an individual, a local church, a denomination or in the world, is one wholly built on, and entirely devoted to the Lord Jesus Christ. The Church is built on Christ the chief Cornerstone. The message of the true Christian faith centres on Him, His eternality, virgin birth, spotless life, death, burial and resurrection, ascension to heaven, intercession for the saints, second coming, millennial reign, eternal kingdom and dominion. A message and a life centred on Christ reflects true Christianity.

The Lordship of Christ is very central to the Christian life. When we are born again, our sins are forgiven, we surrender our lives to Him as Saviour and Controller of our lives. He assumes the position of Lord, Ruler, Master, Teacher, Guide and Leader. Every time, we confess and proclaim Him as Lord. When we submit to the Lordship of Christ and accept Him as the One that has dominion over our lives, decisions and ambitions, we know we are practising true Christianity. We must give and surrender everything into His hand.

By virtue of Christ’s death on the cross for the whole world, God made Him the Prince, Lord and Ruler over everyone. Christ did not snatch or attribute this sovereignty to Himself; God crowned Him both Lord and Christ. If we are going to honour Christ, He must reign over everything in us. He will not accept partial Lordship. We must not keep back any area of our lives; rather, we must yield all to Him. We must surrender everything to Him, so that He can reign over us.

New converts to Christ must realise that their lives no longer belong to them. The simple act of repentance, confession and surrender to Christ, turns over our lives to Him. We cannot control our lives anymore. Christ now has the right to exercise dominion and authority over us. He is King over all. He has need of our lives.

Before we knew the Lord, we were roaming about, tied and bound to some habits. We were limited and constrained by sin. We were also tied to some sicknesses and infirmities. But when the Word of God came, we were loosened from our chains that we might be given wholly to Christ. Those who come to Christian meetings and are loosened from their sins and infirmities should understand why the Lord did it: that He might reign over them. Everything within, without and around us belongs to Christ. We must realise that we do not belong to ourselves anymore. Whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord. Death opens the curtain for our transfer into the presence of God.

We are also the possession of the Lord because He purchased and redeemed us. Whatever situation we find ourselves, we must remember that we are not to live for ourselves. We cannot receive Him as Saviour without making Him the Lord of our lives. No area of our lives should be shielded from Him. Our actions, mind, thoughts, dispositions, desires, manners and tastes should be given to Him. Self must not have dominion over us but must be crucified. Jesus must control our lives, marriage, business, etc.

As servants of Christ, we should not seek to exalt and project ourselves. We must have the mind of Christ and seek to please the Father in all things. If Christ, the King of glory, the Master of angels humbled Himself, what are we doing with pride? There should not be any area of our lives that we have not surrendered to Christ. Our lives will be beautiful, as we yield totally to the Lord.

Jesus is Lord – Part 2

Looking ahead into the New Year, some people may have cause for uncertainty and foreboding. There may be fear about what the future holds. Believers, however, need not exercise fear. It is sufficient to put all trust and confidence in Jesus Christ, Who alone knows the future, and has the power and authority over all things. He is the only One that can save us from sins. Some think Christ belongs only to the Jews or that Christianity is the religion of a particular race. They do not know that the message of the Cross is to all people. Christ offers three things in His office as Saviour and Lord.

First, He pardons our sins. He has the right to wipe away all our sins. God the Father gave Him the power and authority to forgive all sins. An angel, a man or the founder of a religion cannot do it. God has exalted Him to be the only one who can forgive sins.

Second, He has purchased us. He buys us completely from the world to make us His property. He takes care of His purchased property. If we are sick He heals us, and if there is any attack or affliction He delivers us. We are God’s special property. We must, therefore, remain faithful to Him. As preachers and leaders of God’s people, we are to take care of the flock. We cannot afford to deal with them anyhow because He paid a great price for them.

Third, He possesses us. We do not belong to ourselves anymore, just as a married woman does not belong to herself again. Some say their Christianity is in the heart and that they can do anything they like, go where they want to go and work anywhere they want to work. But the Lord wants us to glorify Him in our body, spirit and soul. Whatever we wear must glorify the Lord. He wants our personality to radiate His glory, our minds to think His thoughts, our eyes to see as He sees, our hands to serve Him, our feet to run errands for Him and our mouth to speak His Word.

What is the implication of all this? It means He owns us, and we must love Him with all our hearts. The earlier we recognise the ownership of the Lord over our lives the better for us. We will live a life of mediocrity, if we do not recognise that Christ owns us. In all things, we must ask to know the Lord’s will. Paul handed over his life to the Lord the very first day Christ met him. He realised he must submit and surrender all to Him. He was formerly in the habit of consulting self, but now things had changed. He used to be a proud person because of his credentials. He was full of himself, conscious of his attainments in life. He bragged about everything. But when he surrendered his life to Christ, the Lord directed him to one of the brethren to test his humility.

Christ expects us to humble ourselves in all things and unto all men. We must respect, love one another, no matter our title, status or position. Christ frowns at us, when we call Him Lord and fail to do His will. We should show that we truly accept the Lordship of Christ. As a living sacrifice to the Lord, we should be totally given unto Him. The evidence of Christian virtue in our lives is complete yieldedness to Christ our King, absolute surrender to the Lordship of Christ, unquestioning submission to His sovereignty.

God's Grace For The New Year – Part 1

If there is anything you need this New Year, if there is one provision of heaven that has the capacity to carry you through the turbulence that is life on earth, if there is one simple and short solution to the problems of life, it is to be found in the word, Grace. The kingdom of God promises so much, but what you desire can never come through your good works or civilised behaviour, or resolution to turn a new leaf in 2022. In time, all this will be found to be inadequate.

Grace is one of the most understated provisions of God for Christians. Yet, without it, everything else you depend upon falls spectacularly apart. You come into the kingdom of God, remain there, and enjoy all the blessings of the kingdom all by grace. It is, therefore, for this reason that the Apostle Paul’s epistle to the church in Colossae began with grace and ended with grace. All that it reveals to us from chapters one to four is the expansion, explanation and the work of grace.

The acronym ‘GRACE’ stands for God’s Riches At Christ’s Expense. Everything that believers enjoy in Christ Jesus is by grace, not on the basis of merit or good works. Our redemption and preservation in the kingdom is by the grace of God. God’s grace works supernatural wonders in the life of His children.

The entire epistle to the Colossians reveals God’s provisions for believers through His grace, mercy and love. Also, it highlights Christ’s sacrifice on the cross for the redemption of mankind. By God’s grace, believers’ needs are met, their prayers are answered, they enjoy divine visitation and obtain the Christian experiences that make them walk in godliness and ready for heaven.

Grace is God’s redemption at Christ’s expense. Man’s salvation from sin would have remained a mirage with the vicarious sacrifice of our Lord Jesus Christ on the cross of Calvary. “In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins.” It is obvious that no one can obtain the inheritance, which God has prepared for His children, for all believers, without cleansing in Christ’s blood.

Redemption means that Jesus Christ purchased us from the slave market of sin through His blood, with which also He pardoned and cleansed our sins.

Although history chronicled the acts of some famous and heroic men, none of them qualified to redeem man from the bondage of sin. “Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved” (Acts 4:12). God’s promise of man’s redemption was fulfilled through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the Cross.

To receive pardon and forgiveness, and qualify to enter God’s holy kingdom, sinners must recognise Christ as the only way, confess and forsake their sins. We can only enter God’s great and glorious kingdom through grace. Grace is the key that unlocks the gates of heaven.

Apart from the miracle of healing, deliverance, fruitfulness, provision, promotion, among others, which believers enjoy, the origin and climax of God’s visitation is redemption of humanity from the bondage of sin. “Blessed be the Lord God of Israel; for he hath visited and redeemed his people. To give knowledge of salvation unto his people by the remission of their sins”.

Our redemption in Christ Jesus is by faith. Therefore, people who attempt to obtain salvation by their good works or by being religious cannot experience the forgiveness and peace of mind that God’s grace brings. Redemption through Christ takes away the burden and guilt of sin. We must, therefore, accept, believe and confess our redemption in Christ, which qualifies us to enjoy other blessings of the kingdom. No one knows all that the New Year portends, but one thing is certain: the grace of God is sufficient to steer you through it successfully.
