Misconception about Garri
Although some people erroneously think that the consumption of garri can affect vision, however there has been no medical proof to substantiate this statement. Also the argument that garri is predominantly consumed in the poor households is not true. Cassava, the root from which garri is produced, is rich in fiber, copper and magnesium. Being an important source of one of the nutrients, garri is popular in both the households of the rich and the poor.

What then is Garri?
Garri is the powdery food material flour made from the tuberous roots of the cassava plant, which in the process of its manufacture is changed into dry edible granules, It is packaged in bags and the quality differs from difference in processing.

Consumption of Garri?
Garri can be served in different forms. Eba is a stiff dough made by soaking garri in hot water and kneading it with a wooden baton until it becomes a smooth doughy staple. It is served as part of a meal with various soups and sauces. Some of these include okra soup, egusi soup, vegetable soup, banga soup, afang soup, and bitter leaf soup.
Garri can also be consumed as a cheap snack, cereal or light meal, garri can be soaked in cold water ( in which case it settles to the bottom) and mixed with sugar or honey. Peanuts, fried or boiled fished, coconut or groundnut with or without evaporated milk are sometimes added. The amount of water needed for soaked garri is 3:1
Some consumers also eat garri dry without water, but with sugar and roasted peanut added. In its dry form, garri is used in many households in West Africa as an accompaniment for soft cooked beans and palm oil. This food mix is jovially called “soku dale” in the Yoruba language, in Nigeria. It is also eaten with bean cakes in Nigeria.

In conclusion
The fact that garri is cheap to buy (which is not very true to all incomes) You can check the price for yourself at agri-ecommerce platform such as daydone.com.ng where you can even order and have it delivered to you. This produce is another african native food which make its consumption to further increase in the households in West Africa. Plus being edible with little or no processing and being a foodstuff that be readily mixed with other foodstuffs.
You will agree with me that garri is popular in all the households, and should not be synonymous to poverty, what do you think?.
