Resilience is one of the best traits to have in today’s chaotic world. The advent of the pandemic and the subsequent social distancing restrictions means that people who can handle pressure in stressful times – and not lose their cool on the arrival of adversity – are the ones most likely to thrive.
Most of us are aware of this fact. Yet only a few seem to acknowledge that resilience is not necessarily a genetic trait. It doesn’t have to come naturally in our personality. We can also learn how to keep our cool when the going gets tough.
Here’s how we can do that:

#1: Find Your Sense of Purpose
You can draw a straight line between having a sense of purpose in life and feeling less stressed during tough times. Those of us who know what they want to achieve from their life and take steps in that direction are less likely to feel bewildered when things don’t go according to plan.
Research proves this viewpoint. One study states that people who have a sense of purpose are able to deal more productively with stressful situations. Hence the reason why you might want to involve yourself in activities that are more meaningful to you. Here’s how you can do that.
Provided you’re a people’s person who likes helping others, you may want to involve yourself in volunteering activities. Or you could participate in activities that get the best out of you. One could give plenty of examples but only you can decide what is and isn’t meaningful to you.

#2: Cultivate self-esteem
Who knew having confidence in your own abilities, including the one to come out on the other side of the crisis with a smile on your face, can build resilience? Researchers tell us that people who continuously remind themselves of their strengths are very good at coping with stress.
You don’t have to found a multi-million dollar company to feel more confident in your abilities. There are things most of us do on a daily basis on which we can commend ourselves and take our self-esteem level through the roof.

For instance, if you are good at scraping the web and have just drawn up a list of corona clean up companies in less time than your colleagues, you can commend yourself at being efficient at your work. You don’t have to wait for others to compliment you.

#3: Develop an optimistic mindset
Staying positive in tough times doesn’t mean that you’re underrating the gravity of the situation. Nor does it mean that you’re pushing the problem under the carpet. It only means that you have a mindset which reminds you that setbacks are temporary and you have the ability to overcome them.
Researchers state the same. One study claims that people who are more resilient tend to be more optimistic as compared to folks who are less resilient.

They are much better placed to have a grip over their emotions and keep their cool when things aren’t going according to plan.

That is to say that whether you’re going through a pandemic, broken a precious item like a carpet disinfectant, or passing through difficult times in your personal life, you need to believe that things will only get better from there.
