The global supermarket and shopping mall brand known as shoprite which has its roots from South Africa and has many outlets in many African countries are set for a shutdown and massive layoffs of its workers amidst global economic crisis due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The firm had announced a planned divestment from its Nigerian operations barely three days ago, while in Kenya it stated it will be laying off 115 staff effective 31 August, 2020.

The retail big store announced on Monday that it will be divesting from its business operations in countries located outside South Africa as a result of low profitability. An internal memo released to its Nigerian staffs stated that the new owners wil work with the management to drive the expansion plans in the Nigerian market.
