A Russian fighter jet was sent scrambling to chase two US reconnaissance planes flying over the Black Sea, according to reports.

Russia said tonight a SU-27 plane was sent to chase two US military jets who approached the border, Reuters reports.

The planes were flying over the Black Sea when they were chased away, the news agency claims.

Reuters cites Russia’s defence ministry as its source.

And the TASS news agency quotes the ministry as saying the Su-27 had intercepted the RC-135 and P8-A Poseidon planes.

It has been reported that the two US planes were subsequently turned away from the border.

Su-27 fighter jets are twin engine aircrafts that can fly at twice the speed of sound and reach 1,553mph.

And similar incidents have also happened over the past two weeks. Last week, the Russian ministry responded to reports that American planes had been spotted flying near the border.

"The American reconnaissance planes were not allowed to breach the Russian Federation's state border," the Russian ministry said in a statement at the time.

The ministry clearly stated no permission had been given for the path of the plane on Monday.

And, just days before on June 19, TASS reported Su-30, Su-35 and MiG-31 fighter jets of Russia’s Eastern Military District were scrambled to intercept US Air Force B-52H bombers, the Defense Ministry’s National Defence Control Centre said.

"On June 19, 2020, the air defence quick reaction alert forces of the Eastern Military District spotted and started tracking a pair of US Air Force B-52H bombers over the Sea of Okhotsk," the Centre added.

It marks an increasingly tense period between the two superpowers.
