The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has warned against the consumption of a very poisonous fish called Pufferfish.

This warning was issued by Jonah Dabit, the Assistant Director for Fisheries, Department of Fishery during an interview with Premium Times.

This fish is also known to be called Swellfish, Globefish, Blowfish, and Balonfish. Pufferfish belongs to the Actinopterygii class of the Tetraodontidae family.

It is characterized by skin texture ranging from rough to spiky scaleless body.

This fish was reported to cause about 50 cases of food poisoning in Japan in 2009 where it is popularly called Fuju fish.

It is more common in tropical and subtropical waters and the report has shown that this fish can be found everywhere in Nigeria making it a serious caution one need to adhere strictly to.

It was stated that this fish contains a toxin called tetrodotoxin, which makes those affected to remain conscious while their central nervous system becomes affected and gradually shut down.

Symptoms ranges from numbness in the face, mouth, and tongue to a feeling of headaches, diarrhea, nausea, slurred speech, vomiting, and weakness of muscles which result after 30 minutes to 6 hours of eating this fish.

A call has been made to create awareness and campaigns to dissuade Nigerians from consuming this fish which happens to be found everywhere in Nigeria.

Pufferfish is more in places such as Lagos, Abuja and other places in the North and Southern parts of the country.

His statement reads “if you interview the fishermen in the northern parts such as Adamawa, Taraba, Lokoja, Niger, and Kebbi, they will tell you that they know the fish and they are aware it is poisonous.”

Mr. Jonah Dabit further emphasized that most Nigerians are not aware of the special procedures required in preparing the fish and hence the reason why we are trying all we can to create awareness.
