Apology

On August 9, 2020, we published a story in our online platform titled: “Ex APC Spokesman asks Buhari to probe Osinbanjo, AuGF over alleged N10 billion withdrawal from TSA,” wherein some allegations of corrupt practices were made against the Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, SAN.

The publication was based on a press statement, which we regrettably assumed to be reliable at the time of publication. Since the publication, however, we now have reasons based on some fresh facts to believe that the story was not duly verified to be correct before the publication.

In view of the foregoing, we hereby tender our unreserved apology to His Excellency, the Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, over the said publication, even as we regret any distress, embarrassment or inconvenience which the publication may have caused him.

I wonder what's wrong will all these media outlets, they always publish news that's false. So assuming Osinbajo kept quiet that's how people would have thought he is guilty.

For how long will they allow peddlers of fake news to use their media outlet and then come back to apologize,is this what journalism is all about at all?

Our medias in this country need orientation on how to report some of the matters, even if that man said so, can't you use your common sense, medias causing more damage to the societies

I think it better to practice investigative journalism than to practice brown envelope journalism and be apologizing.

Tendering apology, and repeating same act over and over again doesn't look sensible enough. That's exactly what most of these mainstream media do. Legal actions have to be taken against them. That's got nothing to do with an anti-press freedom tendency. It's simply called checking their excesses.

They wouldn't have had any reason to apologise if they had reported it with craft. It's not like their foreign counterparts don't report news even before getting the full details (time is of essence in journalism) but they do it in a way that shields them from any legal harassment. Know when to be direct, know when to quote, know what not report at all if the supplier of the information insists on anonymity, know when to use words like purported, claimed, supposed, etc. and most importantly, know how to tactfully use disclaimer clauses.
