Ambrose Alli University, Aau Closed Down, Student Protesting, As Fire Razes Faculty Building by infoprideofnaijacom(m): 10:25am On Feb 18, 2011
EKPOMA-Faculty of Arts of the Ambrose Alli
University (AAU), Ekpoma was yesterday
razed by fire, just as the management of the
university has closed down the school over
what it termed “students’ unruly
behaviour”.
This is even as students of the institution
yesterday continued their protest against
the suspension of the executive members
of the students ’ union over alleged breach
of matriculation oath and oath of office.
The part of the faculty of arts, housing the
department of philosophy and others, was
reduced to rubbles, destroying office
equipment worth millions of naira, as well
as student academic records in the process.
Although, the actual cause of the fire could
not be ascertained at the time of filing in
this report, there were, however,
speculations that the fire may have been
caused by electrical appliances in the
building.
When The NIGERIAN OBSERVER visited the
scene, few students who were not part of
the protest at the gate lamented the colossal
destruction, but ruled out students ’
involvement, as according to them, their
protest was peaceful.
Following the protest, the management of
the school in a press release issued by the
information unit of the university, has
announced the immediate closure of the
school till further notice.
The release which was signed by the
registrar of the university, Mrs. Josephine
Omole advised all students to vacate the
halls of residence latest 11.00am yesterday
and retire to their respective homes.
It explained that the closure was sequel to
the unruly behaviour of the students,
following the suspension of members of
the executive arm of the students ’ union for
breach of matriculation oath and oath of
office.
Meanwhile, students of the institution
continued with their protest yesterday,
blocking the Benin/Auchi Highway, hence
causing motorists to groan.
Traffic was at a halt, as cars coming from
the Benin axis were forced to stop at
Iruekpen, while those coming from Auchi
parked at Ujoelen junction.
Some drivers who fell into the protest were
made to part with some money, even as
some of the protesters took advantage of
the situation to dispossess people of their
belongings.
It took the intervention of mobile policemen
to clear the highway before vehicular
movement resumed, even as business
activities were yet to fully resume as at the
time of filing this report.
It would be recalled that a violent protest
which took a sweep at the university town,
occurred February 15 last year, leaving
several destruction in its trail.
