Let's get straight into the business of the night.

Quickly before I run ahead of myself, let's quickly go through what cashew plants look like.

Did you know that the cashew fruit is in two forms?

Cashew as you know them are nuts. But the cashew nut is not the only fruit of the cashew trees. Or rather, the cashew nut is only a part of the cashew fruit.

The other part is called the cashew apple, which is the swollen stem of the fruit, and they vary vastly in their color, from thick red through varying shades of orange to bright yellow, and just as their color differs, so does their flavor.

Then the cashew nut is inside the kidney-shaped shell that is attached to the bottom of the cashew apple. And inside that shell is a very unpleasant caustic liquid that causes severe burns, so be careful when handling it.

Cashew trees are the trees with large leaves and pretty pink flowers. (See the photo below).

Where can you grow cashew trees?

Cashew does best in areas where the daytime temperature averages about 77°F. They grow anywhere in the wet or dry tropics.

As long as they have some water, cashew trees grow like weeds. They are fairly drought resistant and grow well even on marginal soils where other fruit trees would fail. The best soils for growing cashews are sandy soils.

So that is where I put a climax to it tonight.

Follow the topic to know more information, as we advance and show more hidden truths you never knew.

To be continued tomorrow.

Funny thing, I never knew the cashew nut isn't the kidney-shaped shell like you said... smiley So the nut itself is in the shell. That's something to hold unto oo. Looking forward to hearing more gist from you.

@OyelekeJoy, that's a good thing to know, most people do not note that though, they just conclude the shell all together is the nut. We have to be detailed in what we are doing in our niche of expertise. cool

Planting and agrowing your cashew trees part II

There are three main varieties of cashew which are Brazilian cashew, Chinese cashew, Indian cashew. Brazilian cashew is the most grown in Nigeria. Its colour may be white, light yellow, or ash.
The ash colour is the most common one.

Before planting, selecting is quite important. When selecting, make sure you buy cashew seeds specifically for growing from farmers. Cashew seed for consumption are not viable, because their protective shell has been removed.

N.B. Don’t just pick seeds on the ground, or just pluck to plant, doing this may not produce the kind of return you desire.

Raising seedlings.

Raise seedling in a polythene bag before planting, by doing this you can give them a bit of extra attention and protection. Sow more than one seed , because it increases their chance of producing a healthy cashew tree.

Soak seed nuts in water for 18 to 24hours to hasten germination. Sow pre-soaked seed nuts in polythene bag filled with sandy soil at a depth of 2-3cm with the stalk end up.

Be sure to keep the bag in a warm, light, location. Don’t place them in direct sunlight. As seedling grow, make sure that they get plenty of light and water, but be sure not to over-log the seedlings with plenty of water.

Planting out cashew trees.

As the cashew tree begin to outgrow the polythene bag, it’s time to plant them out. Before you plant out the young trees, allow the plants to harden off for a couple of weeks. This helps the young tree to thrive in their new environment.

Sandy soil ensures a lack of water logging, avoid clay based soil When planting. Dig a hole of about 10m, then transplant your young tree into the soil. After filling the hole with your plant, the young cashew trees should be staked or given some form of support.

Then you keep watering your plants, and caring for it until fruiting. The cashew tree takes 2-3 years to mature into a big tree. With patience you’ll get your desired results.

Thank you for following us through…

We move on directly to the truth about cashew business itself, benefits and advantages.
