Master of Reality is English rock band Black Sabbath's third studio album, released by Vertigo Records on 21 July 1971. Some critics consider it the foundation of doom metal, stoner rock and sludge metal.

It debuted on the UK Albums Chart at number five and on the US Billbaord 200, number eigh. Negatively received at publication by reviewers, the album is now considered one of the best heavy metal albums ever. Having sold more than two million copies, it was certified double platinum.

Master of Reality debuted at number five on the UK Albums Chart, and number eight in the US, where it reached gold status on advance orders alone.[citation needed] It finally sold two million copies in the US. Despite the mainstream success of the record, contemporary music reviewers had treated it with scorn.

Robert Christgau called it "a dim-witted, amoral manipulation" in The Village Voice. Lester Bangs of Rolling Stone magazine characterized it as "monotonous" and not an upgrade on its precursor, but he considered the lyrics more informative as they provide "some answers to the grim cul-de-sacs of Paranoid."
