In Nigeria the more the gravity of the offence, the less the punishment (seteris unsparibus. That is, all other things being unequal).
For instance, you stole N5000, or a wristwatch worth N2000 etc your punishment can be up to 7 years in prison (excluding the 2 years you would have used in police detention). If you are caught on camera stealing millions of dollars (or naira)? Your punishment is a handshake with the president, a promotion to a higher political office etc. You may even be more favoured with a photoshoot with the president holding you hand high and beaming a toothy (goofy) smile. If the above is the scenario, but you are one way or the other not in the president's good books? Not to worry, just promise to pay back 10% of your loot. You are free to go live happily ever after with the remaing 90%.
What about homicide? You killed a single person (whether deliberately or by mistake)? Life imprisonment (or even the death penalty) awaits you. But you decide to kill hundreds or thousands of people while displacing thousands more? Boy, you've just won a scholarship to the best institutions from the Nigerian government? You will be treated like royalty.
Nigeria is comedy gold, only that the comedy usually has tragic consequences.
