It is no news that the rate at which people lose their hair nowadays is on the increase, this has significant impact on the way people see themselves.

Hair loss also known as alopecia can affect just your scalp or your entire body, and it can be temporary or permanent. It can be the result of heredity, hormonal changes, medical conditions or a normal part of aging. Anyone can lose hair on their head or body.

Fortunately to some people they have thick strong hair and are unlikely to suffer hair loss, hence they really don’t have much to worry about. But some people are losing almost all the hair in their scalp.

To a large extent, hair loss is attributed to old age in men but women are as well likely to experience thinning and loss of hair. Both male and female can lose hair at a younger age hence, hair loss is not only restricted to old people.

Loss of hair has taken a tremendous mental toll causing effects such as low self-esteem and confidence, as you notice others wearing hairstyle you could not possibly pull off. Some men are comfortable with their baldness while others are not, as for the women it`s never an option for them. Hence the need to take preventive and control measures to curb hair loss.

In an attempt to solve this problem, different products such as pills, cremes, sprays etc have been advocated but they all come with side effects.

Causes of Hair Loss:

(1) Family history (heredity): The most common cause of hair loss is a hereditary condition that happens with aging.
(2) Hormonal changes and medical conditions: A variety of conditions can cause permanent or temporary hair loss, including hormonal changes due to pregnancy, childbirth, menopause and thyroid problems.
(3) Medications and supplements: Hair loss can be a side effect of certain drugs, such as those used for cancer, arthritis, depression, heart problems, gout and high blood pressure. The hair regrows back to normal once these medications are withdrawn.
(4) Radiation therapy to the head. The hair may not grow back the same as it was before after radiation therapy. But do not worry, advances in technology has taken care of this problem.
(5) A very stressful event: Many people experience a general thinning of hair several months after a physical or emotional shock. This type of hair loss is temporary. Pregnancy is also a stressful event capable of causing hair loss but this is only temporary ,hence do not worry.
(6) Hairstyles and treatments: Excessive hairstyling or hairstyles that pull your hair tight, such as pigtails or cornrows, can cause a type of hair loss called traction alopecia. Hot-oil hair treatments and permanents also can cause hair to fall out.
(7) Poor nutrition and weight loss: Inadequate nutrition is also a cause of hair loss. Diets lacking in protein, vitamin B12, B6, zinc, and amino acid L-lysine, increases the risk of hair loss. Sudden weight loss is a form of physical trauma that can result in thinning hair.
(cool Excessive intake of vitamin A: Overdoing vitamin A-containing supplements or medications can trigger hair loss, according to the American Academy of Dermatology

Some of these causes of hair loss can be prevented while others are entirely beyond our control. However, there are things we can do to revitalize our hair.
