Chief Olabode George, a former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Sunday said the recent increase in price of petrol and electricity tariff will only inflict more hardships on suffering Nigerians.

Speaking in an interview with Daily Independent, George who is the Atona Oodua of Yorubaland also appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari who is the Minister of Petroleum to call the relevant agencies to order as the timing is wrong.

George who said Nigerians never benefited from the palliatives provided by the federal government during the lockdown said it is unfair for the government to add more woes to the suffering of the masses rather than taking actions to ameliorate their sufferings.

“This is not the right time to start putting more burden on the people. We are human beings and there is a limit to which people can begin to take it before they crack under that pressure. You must have a human milk and human face. They said they provided palliatives during the lockdown”.

“Uptill now, we don’t know the beneficiaries of those palliatives. But now, they are adding more pains on the people with petrol and electricity tariff increase. The increase in petrol price will also lead to increase in the price of food in the market”.

“We are talking about insecurity. The first thing we should consider is food insecurity. If people cannot buy food to eat, how can they be at peace with themselves? Mr. President, as Minister of Petroleum should call all these relevant agencies, especially PPMC to order. In America today, they have a plan that you cannot send those who are owing rent out until December. It’s all part of the palliatives”.

“Even if the PPMC wants to increase petrol price, I expect the SGF, Ministers, Chief of Staff should advise them not to do it now. This is not a military government. We are in a democratic government, a government of the people, by the people and for the people. Were you voted into office so that you can put more hardship on the people?”

“Directly, I’m appealing to the President. He should be told that there is hell in town; big hell and it is affecting everybody right across the board. North, South, East, West, everybody is complaining all over the country”.

“How much salaries are people earning and how will they get to work with this increase? Governance is to relieve the pains from the people, not to add more pains. It is not a matter of APC or PDP now; this is a matter for Nigeria” he said.
