Second on the list is a denim jacket made by Levis Strauss & Co. in the 1960s, while Nike Air Max shirts, Polo Ralph Lauren and Louis Vuitton bags were in the top five.

A survey of 2,000 US adults found Converse Chuck Taylors, Gucci belts, and Ray-Ban Wayfarers also on the list.

The study also found a number of luxury items on the list, with more than one in ten choosing the famous Christian Louboutin red bottom shoe as an iconic statement.

Though in terms of memory, the New York Yankees baseball cap has a much higher ranking – in the top 20.

Another 22 percent of adults surveyed had worn the classic Ralph Lauren polo shirt – and more than a fifth wore the classic Nike Air Max shoe.

To remind people of this iconic item and really put their knowledge to the test, Farfetch created the ultimate quiz for fashionistas.

“Customers are more interested than ever in making informed purchases that stand the test of time,” said Thomas Berry, director of sustainable business at Farfetch, who commissioned research to raise awareness of sustainable fashion.

“From used denim to work by legendary designers, customers are ready to find and invest in conscious, durable and timeless products, whatever the trend.”

It also found that seven out of ten will still be wearing one of the memorable trends of the last few years, and more than half have searched for a particular outfit at a charity or vintage shop.

Many of the items on the list were given to Americans who weren’t sure what they had, because three out of five people got rid of elderly relatives’ handouts to later regret them.

But six in ten Americans surveyed (62 percent) said they would rather have low-quality items in their wardrobe than lots of cheap items that won’t last long.
