Hezekiah Okoro Nweje, was an Anglican priest.


A native of Onitsha in Anambra state. He was born in 1919 and died in June 1962.

He was called "Holy Nweje" because of his very humble, extreme righteous, easy going & a humanitarian life he lived. He was strongly devoted to the things of God.

Rev Nweje was known for his generousity, whatever gift he gets from the congregation he shepherded was constantly distributed to those in his vineyard, poor people and the less privileged. He didn't accumulate them to the detriment of the needy. In his way of thinking, he accepted that riches was sharing what you have without accumulating.

There was a time when Onitsha and Obosi were talking for a piece of land in may 1956, Rev Nweje was called as a witness, he told the Judge that none of the towns owned the land, that the land belongs to God. The land and thereof is of the lord. That ended the land tussle. He was always on the side of peace.


At a time, he was called into the position of the Anglican Bishop on the Niger, he rejected and nominated someone he felt was more qualified.

I know about the expression "Holy Nweje" and I'm glad to know more about him today. Thanks.

But some part of the story is vague. He said the land belonged to God and then there was peace?
