High Shipping Charges and Nigerian Shippers Council: The Burden of a Powerless Regulator

Some weeks ago, when Nigerian shippers were still struggling to crawl out of financial uncertainty the COVID-19 pandemic dragged them into, they were confronted with news of proposed imposition of yet another excessive charge by foreign shipping companies operating in Nigeria

The shipping companies led by Maersk Line, wrote the Nigerian Shippers Council (NSC) and other shipping sector stakeholders, informing them of their decision to impose what they called Peak Season Surcharge (PSS) on Nigeria-bound cargoes with effect from September 1, 2020.

The other shipping lines that followed Maersk Line‘s footsteps, in slamming the surcharges, are Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) and French Container Transportation and Shipping Company, CMA CGM with Head Office in Marseilles, France.

Imposition of peak season surcharge and other excessive charges on Nigerian bound cargoes are not new as the shipping line has been doing that for decades.
