Frank Lampard’s side have spent more than £200 million this summer and it seems they’re not done there with goalkeeper Edouard Mendy set to be the next through the door.

Could they challenge Premier League champions, Liverpool, this season?

Well, we’ll get a good indication on Sunday.

But long before the match has kicked off, it’s already getting pretty tasty between the two managers.

While Chelsea have made a whole host of top quality signings, the champions have only signed left-back Konstantinos Tsimikas, who will play second fiddle to Andy Robertson this season.

It led to Jurgen Klopp defending his club’s transfer approach pointing out that, unlike Chelsea, they aren’t run by an oligarch.

“We live in a world at the moment with a lot of uncertainty,” the German told Radio Five Live.

“For some clubs it seems to be less important how uncertain the future is. Owned by countries, owned by oligarchs, that’s the truth.”

It didn’t take long for Lampard to respond, who hit back by pointing out Liverpool have also spent a lot in the past.

"I was less annoyed with it, I found it slightly amusing," said Lampard when asked about Klopp's remarks.

"It's a fantastic story of a club - over four and a half, five years that Jurgen Klopp's been there - that have managed to get recruitment right to a really high level.

"You can go through the Liverpool players - Van Dijk, Alisson, Fabinho, Keita, Mane, Salah - incredible players that came at a very high price.”

While that’s true, the Reds are in the middle of their fourth transfer window spending a nominal amount.

In fact, a Sky Sports graphic is doing the rounds showing just how little Liverpool have spent recently.

In the last four transfer windows, Chelsea have spent a total of £302 million. That’s despite their transfer ban.

Then comes Manchester United with £255 million and Manchester City at £226 million. Spurs have spent £186 million, while Arsenal have paid out £173 million in transfer fees. Meanwhile, Liverpool have spent just £23 million.

Not what you’d expect from a club that reached consecutive Champions League finals - winning one of them - while being Premier League champions.

If Klopp can lead Liverpool to another Premier League title this season despite the club’s lack of spending, it will be nothing short of remarkable.
