There's a popular saying that when you're on Ilha de Queimada Grande, you're just at most 3 feets away from death. Commonly called the "snake island" , it is located 150 kilometers off the coast of São Paulo in Brazil. The density of snakes on this island is so much it has been estimated that for every one meter squared, there lives at least one snake. On this island, you can find the golden lancehead (one of the most venomous snakes in the world ) which exists no where else on Earth.

The Brazilian government banned all trips to the island due to the danger the snakes pose to human life, but likewise due to the danger humans bring upon the snakes — the golden lancehead snake is classified as critically endangered and the area is protected in order to preserve this unique population, the only one of its kind on the planet. Despite the government’s best efforts, illegal hunters still raid the island to capture these vulnerable snakes to sell on the black market.

Reaching The Island
Presently, reaching the island legally requires the cooperation of the Brazilian Navy. A particularly daring tourist could hypothetically travel to Peruíbe or Itanhaém (approx. 1.5-2.5 hours from downtown São Paulo) and convince a local with a boat to approach the island, but doing so is dangerous and illegal.

The island has over 450,000 snakes consisting of different species. It's been a haven for poachers down the years. A golden lancehead for example can sell between $5,000- 12,000 in the black market.
