There is some disquiet at the Lagos office of the Aerodome Rescue and Fire Fighting Services, a department under the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, after the members of staff were asked to contribute towards the repair of a damaged truck belonging to the department.

A source in the department told Sunday PUNCH that the head of the department, identified as Sanni D. E., asked the employees to donate towards the repair of the truck.

The source explained that on September 10, a fireman driving a truck labelled P6-02, rammed into the Fire Bay at the domestic airport opposite the Presidential Lounge at the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos on return from refuelling standby at the domestic wing.


The truck’s front passenger door, windscreen and bumper were partly damaged and the repairs were estimated to cost N470,000. Sequel to this, the head of the department asked the other workers to contribute funds for the repairs.

According to the evidence made available to our correspondent, N300,000 has been contributed as of Friday night and the donation ranged between N2,000 and N20,000 for each employee.

The source added, “FAAN has a budget and the vehicle should have insurance cover. Junior ranks (staff members) are unhappy with this compulsory donation as they have been receiving staggered salaries over the last three months; half at the end of the month and the balance two weeks after. ”


When contacted, the spokesperson for FAAN, Mrs Henrietta Yakubu, said she was not aware of the development. She, however, promised to investigate and revert, which she had yet to do as of press time. Subsequent calls to her mobile were also not answered.
