Reports from Kaduna state say the long serving Emir of Zaria, Alhaji Shehu Idris, is dead.

The Emir died on Sunday morning after spending 45 years on the throne.

Bashir Shehu Idris, one of the chiefs of Zazzau Emirate and son of the late Emir, confirmed the news to newsmen.

Some reports, however, said the emir died after two weeks of illness that saw him admitted at a hospital in Kaduna state.
