THE police on Wednesday dismissed the call by the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) for a sit-at-home on October 1.

Ebonyi State government urged residents to ignore the order and go about their normal business.

The Ohanaeze Ndigbo said it had nothing to do with the call.

IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu said the directive was to protest “bad governance and economic annihilation”.

In a statement by IPOB Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, Kanu urged the Igbo everywhere to boycott all activities organised to mark the Independence Day.

The statement said: “We, the global movement of IPOB, wish to announce to all Biafrans, friends of Biafra and lovers of freedom all over the world that Biafrans across the globe shall observe a sit-at-home in Biafraland in public protests to mark October 1, 2020.

“We, therefore, enjoin all Biafrans and every conscious Nigerian, especially those ethnic nationalities reeling from the triple blow of terrorism, bad governance and economic annihilation, to boycott every government organised ceremony designed to eulogise the failure that Nigeria has become.

“This is the time to let the world know how disastrously intolerable human existence is in Nigeria.

“If you want to see an end to terrorism and organised mediocrity, now is the time to register your anger by ensuring that you and your household sit-at-home on October 1, 2020.

“Do not risk the life and well-being of your children by allowing them to gather in groups in the open where terrorists may find it easier to blow them up or kidnap them.

“This order is to highlight our position and resolve as Biafrans that we are no longer interested in propping up a crumbling state.

“The leadership of this great movement in conjunction with supporters of Biafra freedom across the globe has concluded every arrangement to let the whole world know and understand that we are no longer part of this shambolic monument to terrorism and failure.”

The group said it remained committed to “the full and irreversible restoration of Biafra sovereignty and independence for all oppressed ethnic groups in Nigeria”.

Ebonyi State government urged the people to go about their normal activities on October 1 as IPOB has no legal basis to compel anyone to stay home.

Commissioner for Internal Security and Border Peace, Stanley Emegha, said: “Who is IPOB to tell people to sit at home? That is the height of craziness on their side.

“How can you tell people who have a family to sit at home? To do what? Will you come and put food on their table?

“In the first place, we don’t even know if there is anything like IPOB existing in the state.

“People should disregard the said statement and go about their normal business on that day.”

Commissioner of Police in Ebonyi, Philip Maku, warned IPOB to steer clear of the state.

He said the proscribed group does not have the right to tell people to sit at home.

“People have the fundamental right to movement. If you try to restrict their right to move about and transact their lawful business activities, you are crossing the red line.

“If anyone tries to force people to sit at home, the Police will not fail to deal decisively with such persons,” he said.

The Anambra State Police Command also urged residents to ignore the call.

The spokesman, Mohammed Haruna, told our correspondent that IPOB remained banned and had no right to make the call.

The Anambra State President of Ohaneze Ndigbo, Chief Damian Okeke-Ogene, said the socio-cultural organisation has nothing to do with the directive.

Besides, he said Ohaneze had no control over IPOB.

He said: “They have their Modus Operandi and we have ours. That means, we have no control over them and they also don’t have over us.”

Activist-lawyer Emperor Ogbonna said IPOB lacked the right to compel non-members to stay at home.

He told our correspondent that the banned group would be infringing on others rights by stopping anyone from exercising their right to movement.

Ogbonna said: “IPOB members and their sympathisers have the right to stay-at-home and to go out.

“IPOB doesn’t have the powers to tell everybody in the Southeast not to go out because not everybody belongs to IPOB.

“They cannot compel non-members to comply with their order. If they do so, they will be infringing on the rights of those who are not members.”

The South East governors are not even interested to at least advise the police to be more civil with its citizens...so effectively, whoever gets killed has himself to blame cos you will be abandoned by govt and nothing will happen.

Get this, its an appeal to the reasonings and judgement of victims of Nigerian state allegedly soonsored, monitored and experienced terrorism, economic hardship, electoral fraud assisted by state securities and inec (prior to edo election) to consciously free themselves from the never ending a pc led FG hardships on citizens. Therefore anyone who feels the pain should show so by using his or right of movement to 'stay at home' not to participate in this evil government's inhumane excesses.
Nnadi kanu is not m cannot compel even registered members but it's an appeal. We are staying at home in that day neither participating in any Nigeria government activities nor showing any support.
One Nigeria deception is for SW NC NE NW but never SE and SS.

So much wisdom from Okeke-Ogene. I said here before that there is no single Ipob group or unit in Anambra state. Nobody have such time.

Any Ipob formation, discussion or any sort of illegal groups are non indigenes residing in the state who go as far as creating Ipob to scuttle the peace currently been enjoyed in the state.

The statement from the state president further proved that nothing like Ipob exists here...

The people here are wise and can't be swayed or deceived by a raging lunatic.

So Ipob only exists at Nnamdi kanu's radio station or at Afara ukwu not here.

This is not like peaceful demonstration where police will come to flex their muscle,
Cowardice is when you are afraid to stay at home with zero risk of police attack, but stvpidly run to the western world for greener pastures, then develope cold feet to do what the western world did to get to where they are,
Organised civil disobedience is the best weapon a people have to enforce common sense into an irresponsible government like ours. Its a tested and trusted formular, Support it.

The funny thing is that the ZOO journalist quoted a few people as a way to rebuttal. Among them is the Commissioner for Internal Security, a BS position that has zero authority himself, saying IPOB ain’t gonna put food on their table. But did his portfolio put food on people’s table during pandemic or doing other crisis in the state? DId it put food on the table of family members who lost loved ones to the infamous shoot out In a church sometime ago?

Then there is a police spokes person who probably has no certificate in the person of “Mohammed Haruna” who if you check well his lineage going back a few centuries did not have any Arabic name attached to it, talking. Where and where does he know about Ebonyi except how to smuggle in herdsmen left and right.

Then a jobless state Police Commissioner Named Philip Maku wants to Abandon his babes to comment on IPOB not knowing he is giving them more clout......

Next is a mango tree Barrister named “Emperor” even though he has such a name has probably been watching a lot of Big Brother Nigg Area Territories and doesnt understand his land is being conquered by a more intelligent empire begun by Dan Fodio.....he self, wants to comment and legally is confused because IPOB in their statement ain’t forcing anybody.

The only group that actually spoke well and the truth is the Sabo Sabo Ohaneze that clearly said they ain’t have nothing to do with it...because they dont got nothing to do with improving Ndigbo and they are telling una straight UP......

In Biafra we stand
