Ogbuefi Melie's visit is informed by the need to update the Royal Cabinet on the extend of work at the Nnewi urban water project being executed and funded by World bank and Anambra state Government. He traced the journey in his bid to attract the project to Nnewi town and how he facilitated it with the active support of the Executive Governor of Anambra State, Chief Dr Sir Willie Maduaburochukwu Obiano. He recalled that the Amuko Nnewi water works had been abandoned for over two decades, and felt that their is the need for its revival.
He informed the Royal cabinet that two years ago, an illustrious son of Nnewi, who is also member of the Nnewi Royal Cabinet, Chief Sir Edwin Kalu (Nnayelu) a retired Principal of Okongwu Memorial Grammar School,
approached him and requested that the state should revive the legacy Amuko water works project which he believes has the capacity to supply portable water to the entire Nnewi town and its environs. It was on this basis that he got the Executive Governor of Anambra State ( Akpoo aza Nnewi) and the World bank involved, leveraging on his contacts and his cordial relationship with the bank.

With Anambra State Government paying its counterpart fund, the World Bank provided $1.5m and immediately commenced the revival and repositioning of the Amuko water works as a major Urban water Scheme capable of supplying portable water to the entire Nnewi town and its environs.
Ogbuefi Melie maintained that work have reached advanced level with the following scope of work already done and in place. The work already done is in the phase 1 of the entire project scope are,

1.Reviving of One 50hsp borehole and sinking of two new ones with 50hsp submersible pumps.

2. Installation of a water treatment plant.

3.Construction of 2 300,000 cum each of raw water and clean water surface tanks.

4. Deployment of new 250kva and rehabilitation of 2 500 kva generating sets which were earlier vandalized.

5. Installation of solar panels to power a new 20hsp borehole to ensure regular water supply to the town.

6. Commencement of medium reticulation within the radius of the water scheme extending to villages around the scheme.

7. Construction of administrative and storage buildings.

It is expected that the phase one of the project will be completed before the end of the year.

Speaking further, Sir Melie noted that as soon as the phase one of the project is completed, the phase two will commence which will attract additional investment of over $50m from the World bank to the Urban water Scheme. The funds will be used to reticulate and meter portable water to the entire Nnewi town and its environ.
Hon Melie further encouraged the cabinet members to make out time and visit the project site in addition to the N6.7bn Obiofia Nnewichi Erosion control project which is currently being funded by World bank in collaboration with Anambra state Government. A project he also attracted to Nnewi town.

Chief Dan Ulasi (Okosisi), Chairman Nnewi Royal Cabinet thanked Sir Melie for his hard works and genuine concerns towards the development of Nnewi town.

Members of the cabinet poured encomiums on him for all the projects he attracted to Nnewi and also thanked the Executive Governor of Anambra state, Chief Dr Sir Willie Obiano for all his support and financial commitments toward these projects.

Sir Chris Atuegwu, a former Commissioner for Special duties, Anambra State inquired of the continuity of these projects if they are not completed before the end of this administration. Hon Melie assured him that since these projects are mainly funded by World Bank and coupled with the strong desire that the current APGA led Government in Anambra State will continue to govern the State come 2022, the continuity of these projects are assured.

Chief Barr Obienu joined his voice with Chief Sir Kalu to thank Ogbuefi Melie Onyejepu for his love for Ndi Nnewi and pray that the good Lord bless, abide and lift him even with higher responsibilities.

Ogbuefi Melie Onyejepu used this opportunity to extend his profound gratitude to the Governor, Chief Dr Sir Willie Mmaduaburochukwu Obiano whose love for Nnewi town is without limits and the trust he reposed on him in the discharge of his duties.
