PRE-RETIREMENT PROGRAM AND BASIC OPTIONS FOR RECEIVING PENSION IN RETIREMENT UNDER THE CONTRIBUTORY PENSION SCHEME – Three day Program

Workshop Overview

The Contributory Pension Scheme has come to stay in Nigeria as a large number of Nigerian workers have enrolled under it from inception in 2004 to date.

While the Retirement Saving Accounts (RSAs) of majority of public & private sector employees are being funded monthly by their employers, a large number of persons who have retired under the scheme and are presently receiving their monthly pensions from their Pension Fund Administrators (PFAs).

When people retire from service upon attainment of the retirement age, they are sometime confronted with avoidable challenges when trying to access their retirement benefits from their PFAs.

Program Objective

This program is designed to give individual serving employees the required

knowledge about the pension scheme, how they can assess their pension fund in retirement,

the need to make additional voluntary contributions a few years before retiring and the

appropriate options for receiving their retirement benefit. Another reason is to provide intending retirees the skills for managing small and medium scale businesses and their lives in retirement.

Program Content

Salient issues about the Contributory Pension Scheme in Nigeria, including the investment of the fund;
Their rights as holders of a RSA and how options for access pension in retirement;

Skills for transiting from regular paid employment to a life in retirement;
Skills for managing personal and small business finance and how to invest wisely in retirement;

Basic business concepts i.e. preparation of feasibility study, marketing & selling
skills, risk management and business intelligence gathering;

Basic information about personal health and lifestyle in retirement.


Learning Outcomes
At the end of the program, participants (serving employees) that will be retiring between now and the next five years will be abreast of the following:

Have refreshed memory of pension schemes in Nigeria, how their pension fund is managed & accessed with ease in retirement;

Their rights as holders of Retirement Savings Account (RSA) with their choice PFA;

Skills for transiting from regular paid employment to a life in retirement;
Practical skills for managing personal and small business finance and how to invest wisely in retirement;

Fundamental information about conducting feasibility studies, marketing & selling, managing risks, managing human and materials in small or medium scale businesses;

Basic information about personal health and lifestyle in retirement.


Who Should Attend
Individuals in service but will be retiring within the next 5 years and those that have just retired within the last 1/2 but was not opportune to attend any pre-retirement training program.

Why You Should be Part of this Program
Most organizations do not arrange for pre-retirement training program for their employees before they retirement. The few that does so always wait till the last service year to run such program and what is learnt may not be sufficiently helpful to the intending retiree.

As an intending retiree it is appropriate to learn all you need to know about your pension and the new life and business in retirement a few years before it comes. It is important to also know why you should consider the option of making additional voluntary contributions from now to enhance your lumpsum amount or monthly pension pay-out in later years.
