In the winter of 1984 a student from Science Secondary School Dawakin Tofa did the unthinkable, he scored 9 distinctions in his West African Senior School Certificate Exams. But such an achievement was so rare and unimaginable that the authorities at Lagos assumed he'd cheated. To prove it, a car was sent to pick up the unawares Sarki, straight to Dawakin Tofa where he was made to retake the whole 9 exams in 9 hours.
He made that one 'B' in English Language an 'A'!
Faced with humiliation, the Lagos authorities saved face by apologizing and instituting the National Merit Award making Sarki Abba its first recipient.
He went on to become the first Professor of Urology and Clinical Pathology from Northern Nigeria.
So the next time WAEC makes that announcement, remember we have Kano and Sarki Abba to thank for it!
