End SARS (End Special Anti-Robbery Squad ) or #EndSARS is a movement that started in Nigeria on “Twitter” calling for the dissolution or banning of SARS, a unit in the Nigerian Police force. It is a clarion call to stop police brutality and oppression in the country. The movement began as a Twitter campaign with the hashtag #ENDSARS to request the Government to ban and stop SARS deployment.

The recent nationwide protest against SARS began on Thursday, 8 October 2020, after weeks of anger and outcry with pictures and videos displaying police brutality, extortion, and harassment in Nigeria. Young Nigerians majorly spearheaded the protests in various states alongside many celebrities and activists.

In response to the general protests and outcry on the Police’s brutality, the Inspector-General of Nigeria Police, Mohammed Adamu, announced the “dissolution” of SARS on 11 October 2020.

The dissolution of SARS is a welcome development and a great step in the right direction. However, more dissolutions, policies, and actions need to be done in sync with the SARS disbandment.

Brief History of SARS

The SARS (Special Anti-Robbery Squad) was established in 1992 by Simeon Danladi Midenda, a former police commissioner. The main reason SARS was established was when a Nigerian Army Colonel, Col. Rindam, was slaughtered by police officers in a Lagos checkpoint. When the news got to the Army, soldiers were sent into Lagos streets to search for any police officer. The Police withdrew from security areas, checkpoints, and other interest points for hoodlums; some police members were reported to have resigned while others ran for their lives.
