Buratai innocent of allegations to quell ongoing protests with soldiers, says CSGGG
• Says report of Buhari rejecting Buratai’s request unsubstantiated
• Warns the media to desist from yellow journalism, sectionalism
• As all campaign of calumny against the Nigerian Military will not be tolerated
Leadership of the Civil Society Groups for Good Governance, CSGGG on Thursday, condemned online reports alleging that the Chief of Army Staff, General Buratai Tukur plans to quell #EndSARS protest with soldiers.
The group decried reports also alleging that President Muhammadu Buhari, rejected the so-called request of the Nigerian Military, while stating that allegations of this sort can bring to disrepute the good name of the Nigerian Military under the leadership of General Tukur Yusuf Buratai.
A statement signed by the President of the group, Comrade Ogakwu Dominic, disclosed that the efforts of the Nigerian Army has been constantly demeaned, denigrated by people allergic to progress and growth, people who constantly crave and find joy in destroying instead of building.
The statement read; “Our attention has been drawn to yet another damaging, controversial and unsubstantiated report against the Nigerian Military and we cannot help but marvel at the kind of attack constantly facing the military under the leadership of General Buratai who in his little time in office, has changed the narrative and given our Nigerian Military system a good name and gain.
“Also the report that President Buhari rejected Burata’s request to quell #EndSARS protesters with soldiers is untrue, it is quite a pity that the media who are the watchdogs of our society, have degraded themselves to be peddlers of rumours and unsubstantiated reports which if not controlled or curbed, can cause, incite and create more chaos in the already existing situation in the nation.
“As an organization averted to dishonesty, and unclear practices, we are therefore urging the media to desist from the practice of yellow journalism and avoid restricting their interest to a narrow sphere; with undue concern and interest at the expense of general well-being of our dear nation. Such reports are baseless, the current #EndSARS protest should not be cornered for our own selfish gain; the youths have taken to the streets to express themselves against the police brutality, the Nigerian Army should not be misconstrued or dragged in a negative light when it wants to fulfill its mandate which is to protect the Nigerian Citizenry.” It added.
Ogakwu however warned that any further campaign against the Nigerian Military and its leadership will not be tolerated, he insisted that the Nigerian Military be left to carry out its duties and its efforts should be met with glad tidings not damaging and controversial reportage.
