With the ongoing #EndSARS protests going on i believe this is the best time to join the wave of change and also champion for reform at NIGERIA CUSTOMS the chief frustrater of car dealers, clearing agents and importers of general goods alike.

The biggest frustration we face is the extortion and delays these customs at wharfs and even on the highways give to us and our customers even when we want to pay custom duties. They can do this because unlike how it's done in proper countries where import duties and levies for all categories of goods are clearly stated online and at the custom offices so intending importers can simply use their bill of laden details to make payments EASILY ONLINE and claim their goods same-day or at worst following day....these our customs in Nigeria have INTENTIONALLY REFUSED OVER YEARS to allow automated payments of import duty for goods. I.T Companies have proposed to even build the payment process for them FREE OF CHARGE over years and deploy within a month and they refuse.
They refuse this so they can have chance to demand for bribes at every point of the clearing process and frsutrate you if you refuse.
Many have lost their goods this way. Many have been forced to pay even more than what they're supposed to pay because the officer didn't like their face or how they talked.
Most importantly many have had their business go bankrupt because they can't plan the landing cost of goods properly and profit because the cost of clearing is determined by the mood of one Oga in charge of valuation at the different commands. So you import a good with N5M naira with plan that you will clear it for N2naira and sell for N8M naira. Then the goods land and you discover they're giving you duty of N4 naira. You borrow money to add to clearing and customers are pricing you that good for N6 naira everywhere. You sell out of frustration and drop out of the market. We can't continue like this

If there is an automated process to pay for duties everyones life and business will be better and government will make revenue they can't imagine far from what is even being declared by the customs CG currently. At least double what they currently are getting.....at very least!

We have to demand for for this automated system of payment so our lives will be easier.

Well said but importers and car dealers are also to be blamed.

How? I know a car dealer here who should have paid say N1.2M to clear a car but he bribed the officers token and paid about N500,000 but still sold the car for the price of that cleared with the N1.2M.

Defrauding and scamming the end buyer to make close to 3M on the car he sold for N5M plus.

In conclusion, customs are not only to be blamed but importers and dealers intentionally involving in the sharp practices out of greed should also be blamed.
