Misconceptions About Ielts Exam by Shekinah4succes(f): 11:09am On Oct 19, 2020
*IT IS JUST ENGLISH LANGUAGE GRAMMAR.* No, IELTS is much more than that. It is more of communication, based on speaking, listening, writing and reading than just grammatical theories and concepts.
**IELTS IS ABOUT SPEAKING ENGLISH FLUENTLY* . This is absolutely wrong. You can be fluent but not coherent. The exam assesses candidate's ability in terms of arranging ideas or points systematically, reasonably and meaningfully. Just being fluent is not enough to earn you a profitable band score in the exam.
*IF YOU ARE JUST AN AVERAGE USER OF ENGLISH, YOU CAN MAKE A GREAT SCORE IN IELTS*...This is certainly untrue. The exam is scored based on competency or levels of proficiency that range from non-user to expert user. An average user falls between 3-6 band scores and no foreign university takes less than 7.0 total band score. You can study IELTS band score scale for more enlightenment on this view.
*Certain IELTS test centres don’t give high bands to certain candidates –*
Certainly, this is not true. None of the test centres is biased because they are providing bands only on the basis of the specified criteria and not on any personal factors. IELTS is a high profile test and the test centres will never allow any malpractices during the examination. The exam is quite transparent.
*You need to speak British/American accent to score more –*
Many times, you tend to think that you need to speak in a foreign accent to score more in the IELTS speaking test. But, it would be a huge mistake if you do the same and you may end up scoring even less than you deserve. Focus on speaking clearly, loudly and coherently in your natural accent to score well.
*IELTS is more difficult than other English tests* –
Like any other English language test, IELTS judges whether your basics about the language are clear or not. It is definitely not tougher than other similar tests, in fact, it can turn out be easier if you try to understand the entire pattern and schemes of the examination.
*It is impossible to score more than 7 band score in IELTS –*
With the right preparation, you can definitely score up to 8 bands in IELTS. There are plenty of students who have scored 8 or even 8.5 bands in the test.
*You can take the test only once –*
There is no limitation on the number of attempts that you can take to clear the IELTS examination. If you fail once or twice, do not worry, you can always reappear when you are ready for it again.
*You need to have an academic background or discipline in English/Communication study to clear IELTS –*
It clearly does not matter whether you did ENGLISH as a discipline or not . With the right guidance and proper practice, you can definitely clear the examination with great scores. You can always improve your English by reading newspapers and books regularly. Also, including the use of English language in day to day life can help in getting hold of it..
*And very importantly, this one-week training is meant to build your confidence towards writing the exam.*
Stay tuned!!!!
