Following Lauretta Onochie’s nomination as a National Electoral Commissioner for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) by President Buhari, there have been various reactions. Many Nigerians described the nomination as unlawful, uncalled for, and wrong timing.

Laurette Onochie, from Delta State, is presently President Buhari’s Personal Assistant on New Media. She was one of the four nominees appointed by Buhari on 12th October 2020; Buhari sent a letter to the Senate requesting the Senate’s confirmation of her appointment with three others.

Buhari is still adamant about her appointment even though many Nigerians have shown their resentment and called on him to withdraw the nomination because Onochie is partisan and would be undemocratic for her to occupy the position.

Why the Nomination of Laurette Onochie as Inec Commissioner is a Senseless Political Gamble

Nigeria is an emerging democracy where elections are a thug of a fight, and the aftermath is always at the courts. The decision to give vital choices in election management is essential in the general perception of the electoral organ’s independence as a non-partisan and neutral umpire. Thus, when Buhari appoints a member of his political party who is popularly known as a media hand and ruling party spokeswoman in such a vital post, it tells that the country and its citizens’ considerations don’t matter. It gives a credibility crisis to the electoral commission.

Consequently, below are the reasons why the nomination is senseless.

It’s Unlawful:

It is unconstitutional to appoint one who is an underground party member into such a sensitive position. The Constitution states that appointments to the electoral body must be non-partisan and shouldn’t involve a card-carrying member of a political party.

Section 14(2a) of the 3rd Schedule of the 1999 Constitution declares that “a member of the commission shall be non-partisan and a person of unquestionable integrity.” Also, Section 14(3b) of the 3rd Schedule maintains that “there shall be for each state of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory of Abuja, a Resident Electoral Commissioner who shall be a person of unquestionable integrity and shall not be a member of any political party.”

Sentiment aside, a lot has gone wrong recently in this country.

You can imagine some like this woman as my INEC Boss in the midst of reliable and intellectual men and women in the country.

Something doesn't just seem right in this country
