Maslow has what he rightly calls the hierarchy of needs. He said, in life some things are more important than others.

That's right, and I would say hierarchy of protests!!!

Imagine a farmer whose income has been cut off because the president has made local consumption of food product a taboo. If this farmer storms the street screaming WAEC must reduce students' fees. WAEC must.... lol. He is all over the place screaming about what he perceives as discrimination. Now, if you know this farmer you'd probably be like "sir, are you really okay?" "Is that what you should be concerned about now?"

I mean, you would be wondering if he's in his right frame of mind.

Yesterday I was watching NTA and I saw a group of women whose husbands/sons were police officers. They held placards, chanting, "Stop killing our husbands" "Stop killing our sons" I mean, it makes sense. One was even moved to tears there and she was just lamenting.

Now suppose you knew one of these women whose husband and son died as a result of killings meted on police officers and suppose she joins in a protest, not the one I watched on NTA, another one, chanting and screaming, "We want Jonathan back! We want him back!" it would still make sense to a pro-Jonathan activist which you are, but then, even then, if you know her very well, it still would not make any sense, or better put, she would be acting senseless and without any wisdom.

I am afraid, that is the case of the EndSars protest.

Just to digress a little: some people are so eager to support any cause that's against the government whether it makes any sense or not, whether it is a cause for grave concern or not and I have seen that play out again and again and again and again on Nairaland. Everything the government does is wrong, can't be right, so they feel it is right to challenge every thing the government represents and does.

It is not alright.

Now back to the Endsars scam, is police brutality among the first 5 cause of concern to the average Nigerian?

If you hit the streets now and take a survey about Nigeria's woes, you would get answers ranging from no jobs, no electricity, gross nepotism by the president, rising inflation, falling of the naira, Buhari's resignation, dirty politics, family matters, etc. A combination of these I must honestly admit would top the list of survey takers.

I mean, even if you live in an estate with 247 power and power is not your problem, you are probably having to buy a derica of rice at 1500 naira contrary to the president's campaign promise.

It just doesn't make any sense that a lot of youths are hitting the streets in protest of police brutality and not the president's incompetence and others. It is also noteworthy that people have protested about the other problems I raised, but it never gained traction, it was not protested simultaneously in different states.

And even if we have to protest about the ills of the police, it IS NOT THE POLICE BRUTALITY.

The main ills of the Nigerian police force is its corruption, not its brutality. I mean the taking of bribes and the likes. Chai, see how reasonable people have all this backwards. A police is likely to acquit even a criminal if he hands him money. I don't see how people can be screaming against police brutality specifically and not police corruption.

It doesn't make sense.

Back to SARS brutality, SARS can be brutal, no doubt, but they are more at loggerheads with criminals, people who do drugs (because they almost end up fighting among themselves and others). Most police force are aware of hotspots in a state. If they are in Kano, they know where to station themselves because they almost always get calls to mediate there. Similar to other states.

I'm saying if Nigerians have to protest, it should not be about police brutality at all. There are other pressing issues to make demands on. And even if there is going to be protests about the ills of the police, police brutality is not as important a subject of grave concern as its corruption and recruitment.

Emdsars is nothing but a scam. We can see through this useless attempt to destabilize this country.

What you think? As a law abiding citizen, how many times have you complained about the police this year before endsars became an issue? It seems some people are just trying to replicate the problems of some advanced economy to gain sympathy. I would have been more sympathetic if the cause was endbad governance or lower food prices.

Are you saying what sparked the looting? Don't call looting protest bro.

Now, the protesters didn't protest for a day. Do you know that the acts of protesting would not be approved if it is perceived that hoodlums and miscreants have ulterior motives or would infiltrate their ranks? Say something else bro, these are trained men and would not just kill in public since their permission have to be sought and you weren't there to see how things played out. You don't know. Period. That's how they called it a massacre and everyone believed the great lie.

I see a post from someone who is far from the reality on ground.

Police brutality has become a pandemic in Nigeria. It is somebody that is alive that will talk of job and corruption.

There is nothing like police identifying a hotspot because they are trained, they arrest anybody that looks like he has something to offer, if SARS or other police unit arrests 100 persons, only one or two committed a minor offence, the rest are simply innocent people they want to make money from.

Police and SARS by extension is another authorise cult, and hoodlums in our society robbing, killing, and maiming innocent souls.

Let's put an end to that first, others will follow

Mr. you're not being objective. There are other pressing issues in this country not police brutality. More than 90‰ of Nigerians have never spent a day in a police cell so what are you saying. And more than 95% have not been jailed twice in the same year so which pandemic are you talking about?

The only time most people encounter the police is during inter-state travel and cases of civil disobedience. There is nothing brutal about the police because only lawless and hard-boiled criminals encounter them often. We are bearing the brunt of inflation and rising food prices. Buhari is favouring his people over others. There is rising insecurity and the likes. If sensible law abiding citizens were to storm the streets, that should be one of the last thing on their minds for now.

Mr. If the police arrest you among others, there is good reasons for that even if you are innocent. It is either you are at the crime scene at the moment crime happened, or you are friends and acquaintances to the criminals being arrested or other reasons that helps the investigative process. That is not brutality. It is a standard practice practiced by law enforcement all over the world.

Wait, is it police brutality or police corruption? My brother unless you are not Nigerian-based, the average Nigerian has seen it play out time and time and again that the real ills in the police force is its corruption. You are travelling from A to B and it is more likely that no one would harass or even disturb you if you slip that N50 notes. It is just what it is. Bail is supposed to be free but you have to pay to free yourselves. That is the corruption among others we are talking about. Even the most hardened criminal would not be victimized if he slips the note.

EVERY ENDPOLICE AGITATOR IS A CLOUT CHASER. They are hardly objective or think on their own. So because someone is arguing for a cause that is a big deal to misfits, the lawless, and miscreants, we should protect their cause missing the tree for the forest in a gross act of stupidity. Many people follow herd mentality so I don't see that as a big deal.

My brother if it is a real problem, I would always support it. That is what makes an objective fellow or so I claim. In my write-up, I listed epileptic power supply as one of the main problems bedevilling Nigeria so why would I call them out. It is a real cause of concern bro and that is what reasonable law-abiding citizens should be agitating for. Just because I have not started any protest doesn't mean I should endorse any protest. It. Doesn't. Make. Any. Sense.

If people would disturb public peace and gain the sympathy of many sensible Nigerians, it should be for causes of pressing concern to the populace.

Even the Aisha Yesufu, Davido and co should be arrested and prosecuted.

I still repeat, you are sounding like a man living in the moon.

Police go about with buses and taxis loading people, holding them at gun point and collect bail money with no justifiable reason.

The whole story told about SARS brutality and the police as a whole,do they sound like fictions to you?

Yes there are many more problems to talk and agitate about, we can't address all at once, the police as the enforcers of law must be structured and reformed first to meet global best standard of modern policing, once that is done, everything will fall in place.

In civilised climes, police can invite even a sitting president for questioning.that is the kind of policing system we want, not the one remote controlled by the politicians
