What Happens when Niger Republic Finishes building Kandadji Dam on Niger river? by Blue3k(m): 8:00pm On Oct 29, 2020
Nigeria sells electricity to benin and Nigeria because they're upstream due to bilateral obligations. When Niger Republic finishes Kandadji Dam in 2025 what happens next? If the other countries decide to build more dams after them what then? Does anyone know why the government hasn't released a statement on these developments?

A 130-megawatt power station is due to be built in Kandadji, aiming to generate enough electricity annually to enable Niger to free itself from its energy dependence on neighbouring Nigeria.

Barely 15 percent of more than 20 million Nigeriens have electricity, according to the Nigelec electricity company.

"The essence of said bilateral agreements, by which we give them power and they do not build dams on the River Niger means that Nigeria and her brotherly neighbours had avoided the unfolding situation of the Nile River between the sovereign states of Ethiopia, Sudan and Egypt."

"Power exported to Niger, Benin and Togo based on Multilateral Energy Sales Agreement with the Government of Nigeria is on the basis that they would not dam the waters that feed our major power plants in Kainji, Shiroro and Jebba."

Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu
According to Mamman, the power sale from Nigeria to Niger Republic was based on bilateral agreement on basis of the construction of dams along River Niger.

He noted that some concessions were given to some countries along River Niger for Nigeria to supply them power, adding that these countries are not allowed to construct dams along the waterways to allow Nigeria's hydropower plants to continue to function optimally.

Minister of Power, Mr. Sale Mamman

Im guessing Niger Republic got wise and abondoned this arrangement. Why wait on nigeria when you can provide your own power and improve your irrigation. This could give them the opportunity to export power to Nigeria instead. The dam is scheduled to be completed 2025. I really believe Nigeria will simply fold its arms and do nothing unless they sincerely believe this is an existential threat like Egypt does.

It will only affect the volume of water in the north west states of Kebbi, Niger and Kwara but Kogi, Delta Anambra and Bayelsa will still get relatively the same volume of water because of the Benue River which joins the Niger in Kogi state.

We can easily move from hydropower to nuclear or coal power stations. Solar is another option owing to the abundant supply of sunlight in the country.
Some argue against nuclear due to safety concerns but hey we only got.to sit our asses up and stop being lazy. Nuclear energy is practicable in Nigeria. We only need highly trained personell to man the stations.

Please issues this important can't be analyzed without deducing information from the bilateral agreement. These kind of mentions often make people to have wrong assumptions. You did not mention any part of the agreement that says that they can stop the water flow from the Nile. Remember that international water ways are bound by world Environmental impact analysis regulations.

I dont know the specific name of the agreement. The politicians dont mention it by name assuming everyone just knows what they're referring to. Ethopia did promise it wasnt going to block all the water but Egypt was still ready to go to war over the dam. I think one general was caught on a hot mic saying as much.

There's plans for alternative power sources but I think the water is important for agriculture.

That's pretty interesting to note. I just find funny none of the policians in north seem to be interested in the topic. Do you believe this could be why they're so interested in water resource bill to be passed?

Meanwhile Nigeria is building rail from kano to Niger.

The reason for that is obvious unlike then ignoring the dam. They want nigers cargo traffic to go to lagos ports and to increased trade. They been wanting build rails there since Jonathan's administration and Benin has been trying build rails there for 2 decades.

When it's dammed, the parts of River Niger around Lokoja northwards will likely dry up or become very shallow (it will also have significant adverse effects on Kainji dam that needs flood waters to run at full capacity), even irrigation in the North will also be affected thus decreased agricultural output but the downstream will not be affected because it lies within the rain forest watershed and also has lots of other Rivers that feed it including River Benue.

Nigeria is a very useless and bastardized country with non of the ethnic groups living within it passionate about the country. Similar incident of Ethiopia wanting to dam the Nile almost made Egypt to go to war against them yet Nigeria is doing all manner of father Christmas to Niger that does not want our progress. Any Southerner supporting one Nigeria is a fool because there was never a country!

I hope you know now??

Ok what was Jonathan and Obasanjo excuse. I hope you know projects like these these take years of planning. The ground breaking was done back in 2011. You can read the full history of the project on wikipedia if you care to. As far as in concerned this a failure of Nigerian foreign policy in general.

There is nothing much Nigeria can do about it. Even Ethiopia is about to complete is dam on the blue nile. The Egyptians were talking about bombing the dam before grin I knew they were just blabbing.

Now they want to settle the issue in a diplomatic way.

Most detailed comment of the thread. The north has plenty of river tributaries but they only have 20-40 inches of rain on average compared to 60-80 in the south. I suspect this is why the water resource bill was so important to them. They'll just have to access aquifers and actually get the water utilities working.

There's not much short of war. The logical thing to do now is to get them to pay or at least divert power to ourselves at market prices while they continue building. Why rack up debts if you wont benefit.
