How To Set Up Itunes Home Sharing To Stream To Your Ios Device by drodman: 10:27pm On Mar 13, 2011
Apple has finally introduced a way to stream your music, TV, and movie content from your computer running iTunes to your iOS device as part of the iOS 4.3 update. Though Home Sharing has been around since Apple released iTunes 9 in the fall of 2009, it has been limited to sharing media between computers—until now, that is. Since it's such a new feature for iOS users, we thought we'd do a quick primer on how to set it up.

First, it's important to make sure your version of iTunes on your Mac or PC is upgraded to version 10.2 before trying to stream to your iOS device. Once you've made sure you're using the most recent version, go into the Advanced menu in iTunes and choose "Turn On Home Sharing."

When you enable Home Sharing on your computer, your Apple ID and password are required on any other device that you want to share to (whether that's another computer or your iOS device), so make sure you know your password, and if you're sensitive about your music collection, don't give it out to strangers.

Next, you must turn on Home Sharing in the preferences of your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad running iOS 4.3. This is found by going to Settings > iPod, and then scrolling down to the new Home Sharing login.

Here's where you enter your Apple ID—hopefully the same one you are using for your iTunes library on your computer. After that, go into the iPod app itself and then tap the "More" tab on the bottom. There will be a house icon toward the bottom of the list that says "Shared" next to it.

When you tap on Shared, the app will show you however many libraries it can find on your local network that are using your Apple ID. In my case, there are actually a few different computers that fit this description, but today there's just one.

Once you select the computer that you want to stream from, the device will load up that machine's library and display its name across the top of your screen. You can then navigate through the library just as you would if you were navigating the synced music on your iDevice.
