IN its move to counter the security summit being planned by the pan- Northern socio-political organisation, the Arewa Consultative Forum(ACF),  the Presidency  is  also planning a Northern Economic Summit for Thursday in Kaduna.

A statement by the Secretary of the Northern Economic Summit Group, Alhaji Buhari Bala, and made available  to the Nigerian Compass yesterday said President Goodluck Jonathan would attend the occasion.

Besides, Vice President  Namadi Sambo and other political leaders from the North are billed for the summit being planned to brainstorm on the economic and political future of the North.

The summit has as its theme “An Agenda For Economic And Social Transformation Of The North.”

The statement quoted the Chairman of the group and Convener of the summit, Professor Jerry Gana, as saying that former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (rtd) and former President Shehu Shagari would co-chair the event.

It adds: “Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Malam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, will deliver the lead paper entitled: “Mobilising Capital for the Economic Development of Northern Nigeria.

“The summit will find ways of rebuilding the North, restore its economic fortune, alleviate poverty and improve human capital development.”

Only recently, the leadership of the  ACF was widely reported to be mobilising support for one of the leading presidential candidates in the April polls,  Major-General Muhammadu Buhari (rtd) of the Congress for Progressive Change(CPC),  but the forum has denied any such move.

However, the ACF, while lauding the President over his stance on the need for free, fair and credible polls next month, claimed that it only issued a statement on a planned security experts’ meeting, which recommendations would be forwarded  to the President  for implementation to assist in curbing insecurity in the country.

At a press conference held in Kaduna, the National Publicity Secretary of the forum had said: “We were  taken aback  by misleading reports in some national dailies (the Nigerian Compass not inclusive), saying that we are mobilising retired generals for Buhari, the  presidential candidate of the Congress for Progressive Change(CPC).

“ACF hastens to correct insinuations in certain circles that a planned meeting of experts in security matters is to drum up support for a particular presidential candidate in the forthcoming general elections.

“We only issued a statement to organise a meeting of retired security experts, including the police, army, prison, air force, navy and others, and after the meeting, the recommendations will be forwarded to Mr. President for implementation.”

However, the Nigerian Compass gathered that the planned economic summit for the North by the Presidency was to counter the ACF summit slated for this week.

“I can tell you authoritatively that the economic summit is just another way of the Presidency checkmating leading Northern politicians as the April elections are around the corner. The far North is not comfortable with the Jonathan Presidency. What happened during the PDP Presidential  primaries on January 13 is not being taken lightly and with the soaring popularity of the CPC presidential candidate, Major-General Muhammadu Buhari, the Presidency is out  to get the region,” the source said.

Way to go. The North is one part of the country in dire need of economic development and a massive literacy drive.
There have been several Northern govts led by the very same Ciroma types that are currently striving to pull us backward with their sick politics of bigotry. They need to be overthrown for the supressed younger progressive leaders that abound in the section.

Sadly, ACF has joined the clueless lot that see's kids as political fodder through the almajiri system, rather than as humans with every right as you and I to a quality life, health, education and happiness.
The time for such backward reaching organisations is up.

All that money they get, and they still need economic liberation.

Na wa o.

Accountability and less pissing away of funds is the best way to liberate yourself. . .

I strongly suspect that they see more funds from the government per capita than the rest of the country.
