As far as ideology, the changing times have allowed both the Democratic and Republican party to change position on issues like Foreign Policy, Limited Government, and individual states sovereignty.

Remember that it was the Republican Party of Abraham Lincoln that disagreed with the state sovereignty arguments of the Confederates, with each Confederate state claiming they had the rights to own slaves, while Abraham Lincoln's Republican federal government argued that the abolishment of slavery was federal and applicable to all states of the union.
