Livestock farming goes along with cultivation of crops, some farmers prefer livestock farming because of the opportunity to major on one or two livestock animals. This in turn generates lots of income to the farmer.
Livestock animals include sheep, chickens, cow, grass cutters, rabbits e.t.c
There's high demand in livestock farming due to its meat, it's rich in protein and nutritious to the body. A very profitable business to venture into. It is however, important to have basic knowledge of the business so you can be successful and hence make great income yearly.

(1) Know your Environment

You have to ask yourself a basic question. What do people in my community want? This will enable you to make right decisions.

Take note. You will not make money, if you focus your attention on goats when your surrounding people prefer poultry instead.

For instance, you will not make more profit; in a situation whereby you focus on only pigs where most people around your area prefer poultry rearing.

Therefore, before starting livestock farming, it is advisable to consider your environment for successful livestock farming.

(2) Have a Purpose

Being successful requires setting a goal and achieving it, You must know what you want and how you plan on achieving it. If your plan is to focus on dairy and meat purposes, then your choice of animal should be goat or cattle. Your decision is fundamental in starting up livestock farming because your decision will determine what farm resources and equipment is required.

(3) Choose a good location

Deciding on a location depends on whether you're going into large scale or small scale livestock farming. A farm land for cattle will be different from rabbit farming. A rabbit farming can be practiced in surrounding areas, whereas cattle farming must be practiced in secluded areas, far away from human houses. Cattles are known to carry flies around and so will be unhygienic to have them in close proximity with humans.

If your plan is to venture into extensive livestock farming, choosing a location in the rural area will be the best option because cost of land is cheaper and there are big farm lands there.

Before you finally conclude your decision on choosing a location, ensure that the location you choose is mobile i.e easily accessible by cars. This is an important factor to consider

The location as well as the place you choose should be carefully studied, A question of does it rain frequently in this area, should i be concerned about heavy rainfall and flooding.. All these factors must be considered before arriving at a conclusion.


(4) Feed Properly

The cost of feeding takes up most part of the total cost of production, depending on what livestock farming you're into. If you're into cattle and goats, then Mulch and grasses should be fed to them, this will help save cost on provision of food. Giving your livestock rich nutrient foods is essential for successful production.

A great deal of knowledge, skill and expertise is needed when feeding livestock, ensure you u understand the different types of feeds, learn how to combine them together into feed formulation to form a balanced ration.

(5) Livestock Equipment is Required

Ensure that your livestock animals have their feeding equipment readily available, watering equipment, housing, drugs, vaccines, livestock housing(shed), tools needed for dehorning, sterilizing, disinfecting. e.t.c

Ensure all livestock handling facilities is available in protecting and keeping the animal safe and healthy.

(6) Get your business Registered

This applies to farmers who plan on going into commercial livestock farming. Business registration help create awareness for your business. You can register your business with the local authorities. This ensures insurance and protection for your business.

(7) Marketing Your products

Marketing strategy is very essential in other to excel above your competitors, the first step is to ensure you have high-quality products. Your product must be peculiar compare to others. Knowing how to advertise your products requires certain skill, you may consider creating a website, or web design, even You-tube videos about your product shouldn't be ignored. All these are important marketing strategies. Knowing How, When and where to sell and market your product is vital.

Knowing about your strength, weaknesses and opportunities must be stated, including possible damage, miscellaneous expenses, as well as relevant information on the kind of livestock farming you want to operate
