The Fact Finding Committee (FFC) on Enugu State Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) 2020 election crisis has recommended the immediate suspension of Enugu State NMA activities for a period of one year.

The Committee headed Dr. Mike O. Ogirima, with Dr. Agam Ayuk as Secretary was set up by the National Officers’ Committee to investigate the immediate and remote causes of the violent disruption of the NMA Enugu State Branch elections held on the 6th of August, 2020.

It will be recalled that the much-advertised election turned bloody when thugs, numbering over thirty, allegedly sponsored by a faction of the body, stormed the venue of the election at Michael Okpara Square while voting was ongoing and violently disrupted the election.

Some members of the association suffered various degree of injuries as they scampered for safety for fear of losing their lives.

The FFC also recommended that all bank accounts of Enugu State NMA should be frozen after a proper auditing of the books by the National Committee on Internal Audit till a new State Officers Committee is put in place.

All candidates who participated in the botched elections should be banned from contesting in the fresh elections until 2026.

The committee suggested rotation of Secretariat among the 3 zones in NMA Enugu State Branch to create an atmosphere of inclusiveness while Enugu West Zone should be excluded from presenting candidate for Chairman and Secretary positions in the next elections.

Nine doctors were indicted by the committee for various alleged roles they played before and during the election. The indicted doctors are to appear before the NMA Disciplinary Committee.

The FFC identified as part of the immediate causes of the crisis, the presence of two factions of NMA in Enugu State (one faction was led by Dr. Ike Okwesili, the Immediate Past Chairman (IPC) and the other faction was led by Dr. Ugwonye Onyekachi), disenfranchisement of some members, purported suspension of the immediate past Chairman Dr. Ike Okwesili, institution of a High Court Suit by Dr. Izuchukwu Okam and feeling of domination by doctors from outside of UNTH, Enugu.

The committee made other far-reaching recommendations that will hopefully help avert future occurrences and restore peace to Enugu State NMA.
