Every day in Nigeria, we read stories that either leave us emotionally distraught or force a smile on our faces. At the end of some of these stories, we are reminded that all hope is not lost in humanity, and that there are still people out there who are in the business of lifting others. The story of Ugochinyere Eze is one of such stories which leaves a much desired after tatse.

Ugochinyere Eze is a woman whom you would categorise in the lower class of the society. As an ordinary citizen who fries and sells akara to support her husband's okada business (commercial motorcyclist), no one would have thought that she would one day rise in status to become a Councillor anywhere in this world. The reason is not because akara sellers are not human beings, but because in Nigeria, politics is seen as an aspect of life reserved only for the wealthy or high and mighty in the society.

According to Ugochinyere Eze, she was only 17 when her mother died, leaving her to cater for her six siblings. Things were especially difficult for her and her siblings because their father married seven (7) wives and each wife had the responsibility of taking care of their own children. So, you can imagine the burden on the shoulders of a first born child if they lost their mother.

Ugochinyere tried her hands on several ventures until she finally settled for frying and selling akara. Fortunately, she was able to send some of her siblings abroad to countries like South Africa and Brazil, with proceeds from her akara business.
