What is Pharmacology?

Pharmacology is a branch of medicine and pharmaceutical sciences concerned with the study of the interactions that occur between a living organism and drugs — chemicals that affect normal or abnormal biochemical function.
Pharmacology is divided into two major areas — “pharmacodynamics” which studies the effects of drugs on biological systems, and “pharmacokinetics” which studies the effects of biological systems on drugs.
Note: *Pharmacology is often confused with Pharmacy but
the two terms are not synonymous.
Pharmacology is a biomedical science concerned with the
research, discovery and characterization of drugs WHILE
Pharmacy is a health services profession concerned with the
application of pharmacological principles in clinical settings
(dispensing of drugs and drug information).
Simply put, Pharmacology is a science-oriented
research field WHILE Pharmacy is a direct patient care
practice.
*To be in charge of a pharmacy store in Nigeria, you
must be licensed by the Pharmacists Council of Nigeria
(PCN). Unfortunately, the license is only given to graduates of
Pharmacy. This implies that a pharmacologist cannot run a
pharmacy store legally in Nigeria except he/she is also a
qualified and licensed pharmacist.
However, this does not change the fact that anyone
with the financial capability can own a pharmacy store but
impliessthat such person will require the services of a licensed
pharmacist to run the store.

Most of the work done by Pharmacologists are carried out in the laboratory. Their major work places are;
1. Hospitals: In hospitals, Pharmacologists are involved in clinical trials and research.
2. Pharmaceutical and Biotech Companies: Here, Pharmacologists do basically two things — research (drug discovery and development) and manufacturing drugs.
3. Universities and other Tertiary Institutions: This is where academic Pharmacologists work. Their primary concern is training the next generation of Pharmacologists and conducting academic research.
4. Civil Service: Pharmacologists can work in federal and state ministries of health, federal and state health/drugs agencies e.g. NAFDAC, NDLEA, NCDC, etc.
Here they help in formulating drug policies, regulations and laws. They also conduct research in government laboratories.
