WE MUST NOT ALLOW FIFTH COLUMNISTS UNDERMINE OUR SECURITY, SANWO-OLU URGES LAGOSIANS AT FORUM

The wanton destruction of public assets in the violence that trailed the recent nationwide protests by the youth against police brutality has bolstered the Federal Government-led initiatives geared towards engendering peace and security in the Country

Ministry of Interior, on Tuesday, held Stakeholders’ Engagement on Internal Security and Conflict Resolution in Lagos State, with the purpose to strengthening peace and security in the aftermath of the destruction.

The Ministry engaged in consultations with the State Government, traditional rulers, civil society groups, religious institutions and youth groups on the need to adopt dialogue as key approach in channeling grievances and resolving conflicts.

The consultative forum, held at Adeyemi Bero Auditorium in the Secretariat, Alausa, was graced by the Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, his Police Affairs counterpart, Maigari Dingyadi, frontline lawyer, Mr. Femi Falana, SAN, service chiefs in Lagos and representative of Iyaloja General, Mrs. Folashade Tinubu-Ojo.

Also, political leaders in the State, members of Community Development Councils (CDCs), and Community Development Associations (CDAs) attended the meeting.Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu set the tone for the discussion, saluting the Federal Government for its commitment to restoring peace in troubled States. The Governor described initiative as “a deliberate effort” to address causes of crisis and nip violence in the bud.

Sanwo-Olu said the coordinated arson that trailed the EndSARS protests was a wake-up call to all citizens of the country and security organisations to be vigilant and collectively move against actions that could undermine the wellbeing and security of Nigeria.

The Governor pleaded with the citizens to allow the seed of peace being sown to germinate, while also stressing the need to re-establish communication link between the Government and the people in order to thwart tendencies of those he dubbed fifth columnists and conspiracy theorists bent on employing disinformation and misinformation to destabilise the State.

He said: “The level of insecurity being experienced across the nation calls for serious concern, considering its implication not only on the socio-economic development and prosperity of our people but also on the unity and territorial integrity of our nation.

The importance of an effective strategy for peaceful resolution of conflict cannot be overemphasised.
“We have the opportunity today to share knowledge and ideas that could pre-empt crisis situations through conflict resolution mechanism.

That incident through which extensive damage was wrecked on public infrastructure and private businesses, is a wakeup call to all well meaning individuals and organisations that we cannot afford to allow external forces or factors threaten or undermine our wellbeing and security.

“We have to reignite the communication link between government and the people so that fifth columnists or conspiracy theorists will not be able to infiltrate and spread disinformation and misinformation that would jeopardise the future of our country or the opportunities available for our youths to contribute to the greatness of our country.”Aregbesola said the forum was the third stakeholders’ engagement which the Ministry of Interior initiated to strengthen peace across the country.

Aregbesola said the forum was the third stakeholders’ engagement which the Ministry of Interior initiated to strengthen peace across the country.

The Minister said the Federal Government particularly had a responsibility to deepen peace and reduce conflicts in Lagos, which he described as the cradle of the black race.

I think it would be best to see the Government giving cheques to affected people rather than these very expensive forums that only shared pictures.

The cost of these gatherings can actually renovate some of the destroyed places or assist a number of people affected.

All the previously security challenges going in in the state, where they caused by reporters? It is easy to push blame.
Lagosians do not know who to believe. You first said you did not invite the army only for the army to day you invited them .
Lying is a bigger threat to national security
Here can be no growth unless one is discontent with the present situation and an attempt to envision a new possibility. The vision guides him all through the protest . Protest is a decision to let go of the unwanted ways. Brutality and injustice awakens the desire for transformation.

Visionaries face lots of obstacles in their first attempt . The resistance is much . Many at times, they do not live to withness the ideal come to life. They are aware their ideal may come at the detriment of their lives. They loose their property, yet they persisted .Jesus is a visionary. He died yet Christianity lived . The numerous youth who have lost their lives are matyrs.

Visionaries know that transformation does not happen overnight. He is wise enough to be content with the gradual progress . perfection is not his goal . Seeing an improvement no matter how little gives him fulfilment

What Disinformation and Misinformation are these misfits talking about?

What Future of the Youths are they referring to? Or is it the same Future they're stealing right in front of us?

Even after the Massacre, all we hear these days are the arson and destruction of lifeless, dilapidated and over priced buildings in Lagos.

Shameless Nation!

RE: ‘Gov. Oyetola, Aregbesola Set For Showdown In Osun This Week’

My attention has been drawn to a piece titled ‘Gov. Oyetola, Aregbesola Set For Showdown In Osun This Week’ written by Temidayo Akinsuyi, the Political Editor of the Daily Independent.

The Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, is principally visiting Osun in obedience to the directive of President Muhammadu Buhari to members of the Federal Executive Council to visit their respective states and hold robust engagement with their constituents, including their state governors and members of their state cabinet. This is in light of the recent #ENDSARS protest and its attendant carnage.

The Minister had written to the State Government, informing them of the presidential directive and his intention of meeting with them.

The period of the visit also coincides with the 10th anniversary of the return of progressive government to Osun. A group organising the anniversary had invited the minister to the event and he gave his solemn promise to attend.
However, we read with shock, the news report by Mr Akinsuyi that the minister will visit the state with thugs imported from Ede and other neighbouring states.

This we find to be in bad taste and totally unexpected from a reputable newspaper.
The author alleges further that the minister has perfected plans to use his influence as a minister to deploy paramilitary officers of the Civil Defence, Immigrations and Prisons (sic) to shatter the relative peace being enjoyed in the state.

This is a poor reflection of the purposes of the agencies and how they work. Statutorily, the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) deals with immigration and border management and have no business with other civil engagement. They can only operate outside on matters regarding breach of immigration rules by aliens.

The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) are in charge of keeping custody of convicts and awaiting trial suspects. They are confined to the custodial centres, except when they take suspects to courts or hospitals. The Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NDCDC) deal with specific civil and security issues. How the minister can deploy these agencies like thugs to cause mayhem beats me hollow.

A journalist should be knowledgeable and well informed. Even when absurd and preposterous allegations are made, the journalist should discard such and report only what is reasonable and will not bring his medium to disrepute.

Allegations should not automatically become news. The reporter has a professional duty to either ask for proof of the allegation or go ahead to investigate it. It is only when he is convinced that there is substance to the allegation that he should consider it worthy of being reported. Reporting untrue and unfounded allegations amounts to peddling fake news.

Showdown? Since when has a minister returning to his base become a showdown with anybody? Ogbeni Aregbesola is an indigene of Osun and a Minister of the Federal Republic. He is on presidential assignment. How does that amount to showdown with anyone?

The minister was privileged to be the symbol of the return of progressive government to Osun. His emergence on the platform of Oranmiyan in 2005, his contestation of the 2007 governorship election under the most adversarial condition, the almost four-year titanic battle to reclaim his mandate, the David and Goliath re-election contest of 2014 and the epochal succession election of 2018 are epic stuff with Ogbeni as the main gladiator. It is a history worth celebrating.
This does not connote antagonism with the state government. Rather, it complements it.

It is sad to note that a section of the media is obsessed with fostering a narrative of conflict and antagonism between Ogbeni Aregbesola and the State Governor. Where there is no evidence of this, they have to concoct one and, in the process, detract from the credibility their organisation.
