Newspaper Vendors Slam Family Of Slain Colleague For Demanding N500m From Gbajabiamila

Newspaper vendors in Nigeria have slammed the family of their late colleague, Ifeanyichukwu Okereke, who died after being shot by a security aide to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, for demanding N500m from the speaker.

Igbere TV had on Tuesday reported how Okereke’s family, in a letter to Gbajabiamila dated November 23, 2020, signed by the lawyer of the family, Chief Mike Ozekhome (SAN), demanded the large sum as compensation.

Ozekhome said he was given the mandate to write the letter by the father of the deceased, Okorie Okereke; and the younger brother to the deceased, Destiny Okereke.

The Department of State Services (DSS) had last week arrested the operative, Abdullahi Hassan, who shot Okereke while Gbajabiamila had also visited the family of the deceased and promised to ensure that they do not suffer.

However, the family demanded more, adding that nothing could bring back the dead vendor back to life.

The family also asked the Speaker to ensure that the safety of vendors is guaranteed as they had become afraid to return to the streets since the tragic incident.

The Okereke family said it would take legal action against Gbajabiamila if all the demands are not met within seven days.

But in a letter made available to Igbere TV, on Wednesday, in Abuja, the newspaper vendors' leadership faulted the demands of Okereke’s family, berating them for threatening the speaker with litigation.

The letter was jointly signed by Comrade Benji Obute, President, Abuja Newspapers Distributors Association (ANDA); and Comrade Etim Iwara, Chairman, Newspapers Vendors Association, Abuja (NVAA).

While disowning the late colleague family's letter in its entirety, the vendors said they were neither consulted nor ordered anybody to write and send such letter to the Speaker on their behalf.

“In as much as we cannot decide for Ifeanyi's family what they want in place of their slain son, we strongly object to the use of our name in the letter. We are not at war with anybody or agency and not afraid of going to the streets,” it read.

“At our level, we are engaging the Rt Honourable Speaker and his team, and having fruitful discussions aimed at getting adequate compensation for the family. We do not encourage and support any aggressive approach since the Speaker has taken responsibility and doing everything within his powers to alleviate the pains of the family and all those associated with the slain Ifeanyi.

“We enjoin the family to tow the path of dialogue and have this issue resolved amicably as needless legal approach and media trial won't yield the needed fruit,” the letter added.

Actually they were supposed to sue DSS for N500m not the speaker.

The person that shot their son is still alive and he could also be joined in the suit

Who gave the association money?

The association are simply trying to be reasonable with the family.

If Gbaja had neglected the family, I am sure they won't have demanded 500 million

Their attitude is the reason why some people are often encouraged to be heartless in Nigeria.

I'm sorry to say but they are acting like opportunists. Will 500m replace the life? What exactly is it for?

500ml loool now that's greed. If the matter goes to court, the family would not even see 50 or 100ML. Rip to the guy and I honestly feel for his wife and kids but 500ml is a lot of we take into consideration the earning capacity of the deceased.

I wonder oh.
We do not value human lives.Value of a life should be > or = worth of the richest man in a country . Main reason why security agents and fellow citizens kill others is families quick accept token as compensation. In some cases, 500k will be paid to the family of victim.

No amount of money can buy back the lost life. But why should they be asking for 500m? To bring him back to life?

To be frank, that amount is so unrealistic in the Nigerian system. Although no amount of money is worth the soul of any human, I believe the late vendor's family wants to use this opportunity to hammer!

Im not sure the late vendor's family newtorth up to 100 million. Of course no amount of money is worth any human life but asking for that amount only sends a message of greed. How much was the late vendor earning before he was killed that they are asking for 500 million?? For what exactly? They should have asked for 1 billion instead Na since nothing can bring back their dead son.. Or is it because the speaker is involved?? In fact, was it the speaker who killed him that warrant them asking for such outrageous amount?? They should go and hold the security operative responsible if things are to go properly!! If care is not taken, 20million sef they will not see!!!

Mike Ozekome is a big disgrace to his beautiful and successful career as far as this case is concerned. Even if the family is making such unreasonable and illegal demand at Femi Gbajabiamila, he is in better position to advise them to tow a part of amicable resolutions on the issues and help them negotiate a good deal on the ground of emotions.

For instance:

They should negotiate a good employment deal for the wife and "may be" a brother of the deceased to support the family.

Scholarships for the children of the deceased

Reasonable amount of money to be paid on instalments over some period of years to avoid creating unnecessary trouble within the immediate and extended family cycle.

Include the parent of the deceased in the negotiations....

Ensure in the negotiations that, the DSS officer in question is adequately brought to book in defense of the constitution of federal republic of Nigeria.

All these could be done out of court without drawing media attentions.

Mike Ozekome(SAN) actually misinformed the family big time and disrepute his highly exhorted reputation for a price of greed.
