What do you know about the suspension system? It is time to learn!

Ever heard of Suspension system in your car?

You most probably have but you just don’t know what it does and why you should.

Well, we hope by the end of this article, you might have learnt something new. Oh and don’t worry we will try to make this less technical for you so you can understand what we are talking about.

A suspension system encompasses both springs, wishbones, dampers, axles, tires and links upon which the car’s frame and body are mounted. It is basically those things which connect the car to allow for motion.

It performs functions similar to the skeleton in the human body.

There are several types of suspension rings but it is not the main focus of our discussion and we need to be careful not to clog the article with too much information, so we shall be providing you with various links to help you understand better.

The suspension system is a must have to maintain the proper operation of the car
Back to our discussion, the suspension system in your car plays a vital role in ensuring your movement from place to place. Some of such other functions the suspension system plays include:

- It helps to ensure the stability of the vehicle and enhance the driver’s control of the vehicle.
- It helps with consistent handling and braking.
- It helps to ensure that tyres remain in contact with the road.
- It provides wheel alignment.
- Reduces the frequency of wear and tear of your tyres.
- It helps protect against the effect of shock forces.
- It ensures the comfort of passengers while in motion.
- It protects against sudden impact from bumps.
So you see, the only reason why you don’t feel the forceful impacts of the many bumps and potholes on the Nigerian roads is that your car has a good suspension.

Side note: it always important to do at least a monthly check on your car’s suspension system particularly if your area or the roads you ply are filled with a lot of bumps and potholes.

There are several types of suspension system which we shall briefly list but our major concern is the parts that make up the suspension system. Types of suspension system include:

- Independent suspension system
- Dependent suspension system
- Air suspension
- Multi-link suspension and a host of others
We shall be examining some parts of the suspension system and giving you prices for some of them. The parts include:

- Shock absorbers
- Axles
- Springs
1. Shock Absorber

Shock absorbers are basically devices- shaped like a pump- to help slow down the actions performed by the suspension rings while also trying to reduce the impact of vibrations. They also serve to ensure that the tyres of your car don’t lose contact with the road, thereby enhancing the braking system and contributing to the safety of your car.

You will generally find the shock absorber between the wheel and frame of your car. They also perform the duty of helping the cars adapt to various conditions. There are many types of shock absorbers. Below is a list of prices of shock absorbers for some cars we have compiled for reference:
- 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Price - ₦43,000
- 2005 Honda Ridgeline

Price- ₦40,000
- 2010 Land Rover Range Rover Sport

Price- ₦60,000
- 2006 Toyota Highlander

Price- ₦90,750
2. Axles

Generally, all vehicles that are on wheels require an axle. The axle plays the vital role of ensuring that power is transferred from your engines to your wheels. It is the duty of the axle to ensure steering, braking and driving. It essentially helps with the movement of your car and also provides your car with the needed support for the entire weight of both cargo and passengers you may be carrying at the time. Most often, the rumbling sound or vibrations you hear in your car could be a pointer to a bad axle in need of repair.

Some axles we could find for you to give a general idea about how much it cold cost are listed right down here:

- AC cars front CV Axle Shaft Joint Left Right

Price- ₦40,000

- GCK Front CV Axle Shaft Joint Left Right - Price- ₦18,750
- Mobis Shaft Head

Price- ₦18,750
3. Springs

Springs are essential to the performance of any vehicle’s suspension. They perform the essential duty of guaranteeing riders comfort by helping the car to adjust to uneven road surfaces.

For example, when you encounter an unavoidable pothole, the spring takes the responsibility of ensuring the safe downward and upward motion. Same goes when you encounter a bump. The spring works along with other suspension parts to ensure that the vehicle is not compromised in any way when you encounter bad road surfaces. Springs are the biggest factor in road-handling, road-holding and braking performance. Some popular types of springs include:

- Coil Springs: These are the kinds found mostly in older cars and heavy trucks. They are in spherical in their features and capable of carrying heavy loads.
- Leaf Springs: These type of springs take the shape of bowed long metal strips to allow for rebound. Also mostly used in older cars and trucks.

Other types of springs include:

- Lowered spring
- Coiled over spring
- Mini block springs
- Banana-shape sided load spring etc.

The list of springs and their prices are included below:
- Merecedes-Benz Rear right suspension air spring

Price- ₦220,000
- 2009 Mercedes GL Class air spring

Price- ₦121,000
- Ducellier rear suspension air spring

Price- ₦146,900
