Good morning Great Farmers and Nairalanders. I'm a fresh graduate looking to start life with a business in catfish. I've got a budget of 1.5million naira and I need your advise on how to go about it.
Please could well meaning farmers be kind to give me a break down of the costs for rearing fishes for four months until smoking size.

I'd like to add that I've budget five hundred thousand naira for the smoking machine and as such I'd be left with 1million for the pond, well, fishes, feed and miscellaneous.

Please, how much can 1 million naira do for me after factoring in the aforementioned cost? In essence, how many fishes can I stock after deducting the costs of constructing a pond? Please which is cheaper or more effecient? A earthen pond or a concrete pond?

The truth is u don't even need to rear them for 4 months at 3 months u are very good to go as far as drying/processing is concerned.

Thanks for your response sir. I know nairaland to be a place where one can get huge wealth of knowledge with the availability of many experts. I want to gather everything I can online before proceeding to a physical farm. Tha ks for your cautionary advice I'll be careful.

In 3 months with proper planning & good seeds u should have at least 300 grams weight size. If u have an earthen pond ,good! If it's tapolyn or concrete ponds u have u are also good to go. Make sure u have adequate water ooo cos water is fish ,fish is also water. I hope u get what I mean?

Please listen to leesantos. Don't let anyone try to corner you with fake experience as the other person is just trying to sell his fabricated machine. I am very sure he has very little knowledge of fish farming to give you genuine answers to your questions.
Imagine 'fish is water, water is fish' .
The first thing is getting started with farming. Don't buy the machine yet. Just start with your fishes and follow your local farmers, they have the experience and knowledge you need. There is a 500-page thread on fish farming here and it contains every information you need to get started. Just a few the first 30 pages or more. You can also start looking for your market now. You can start looking to buy the machine in a few weeks for harvesting.

Your project seem flawed even before it has taken off.

I beg you in God's name before you start write down your expenses and all you'll need from start to finish. Do not try to buy even one bucket before you do this

I wish we were close by so I could impart some education. But, from one look at your plan, brother, it's a good idea but you don't have the right way to go about it.
