Well that's exactly what he thought!

The Jewish religious leaders have sent hired assassins to kill Jesus several times but failed {Luke 4:29; John 8:59} they even tried to arrest him in the presence of his audience but those sent to arrest him were overwhelmed by his message {John 7:45-46} so Judas Iscariot thought he will just bag the money and goes back to beg for forgiveness, after all he taught them to always forgive their brothers! Matthew 18:21-22

Jesus has been telling his closest confidants that he will soon be arrested and killed, the event shows lack of concentration on the part of Judas, definitely he began thinking of so many things to the extent he couldn't concentrate on the most important part of Jesus' message.

This teaches us that we must not let anything distract us when we are taking in life saving instructions! Matthew 7:24-27

Well, regardless of how you try to rationalize it, he committed a sin against his Master/Teacher, and burdened with guilt, chose to end his life instead.
