The killing of over 43 farmers in a rice plantation in Kwashabe village, about 20 kilometres north Mauiduguri by some members of Boko Haram terrorist on Saturday, has sparked reaction amongst Nigerians.

Recall that, after the incident, Nigerians including Northern elders called on president Muhammadu Buhari to sack his Service Cheifs, saying they are incompetent.

Meanwhile, president Buhari said the government had given all the needed support to the armed forces “to take all necessary steps to protect the country’s population and its territory.”

Responding to this, Mr. Onyekachi Adekoya a Sectoral Specialist while speaking on Channel Television programme, Sunrisedaily, on Tuesday, said, the Nigerian military doesn't have the necessary equipment to combat terrorism decisively in the North -East.

According to him, there is a constraint as to why the Nigerian military cannot deal decisively, adding that Nigerians know where Boko Harams is, we know their hideout, we know how they operate. He said we lack the competency to deal with Boko Haram insurgents, but the military is ill-equipped.

He noted that, there are about 40, batallions operating in the North-East, and made reference to a viral video of a Major-General Olusegun Adeniyi, putting himself in front of his troops doing a video recording saying, 'we are here, all we need is equipment'.

Onyekachi said if we have soldiers with equipment, Boko Haram insurgents would have been defeated. He added that, Nigeria as a country has just 15 or less fighter helicopters.

He supported Borno Sate Governor, Babanga Zulum’s recommendation to recruit foreign mercenaries to help end the Boko Haram war.
